JOB SUMMARYThe Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider responsible for the assessment and management of various populations of patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, development of appropriate plans of care, and ongoing evaluation.Emergency Medicine PA Addendum:The Physician Assistant will provide patient care in the Emergency Department on a rotating schedule. The clinical care areas include acute care and observation at BWH, acute care and observation at Faulkner Hospital, and urgent care at Brigham and Women’s Foxborough Urgent Care sites. PAs conduct physical examinations, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel patients, interact with family members and colleagues, and prescribe medications. PAs will work under the direct supervision of an attending Emergency Medicine physician unless they meet the criteria in the EM PA Independent Clinical Guidelines, which includes a minimum of two years of EM experience and demonstration of clinical excellence. The PA will report to the EM PA Director and/or site-specific Chief PA of the Department of Emergency Medicine.Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural setting.Performs complete histories and physical examinations.Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries.Performs bedside procedures as appropriate to the patient population.Performs other duties as assigned.Complies with all policies and standards.QUALIFICATIONSEducationMaster's Degree in Physician Assistant required.Licenses and CertificationsCertified Physician Assistant (State License) required upon hire.Work ExperienceExperience as a physician assistant preferred (0-1 year). Required for PA II is 4 years.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSkilled in taking medical histories to assess medical conditions and interpret findings.Ability to maintain quality control standards.Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.Ability to interpret, adapt, and apply guidelines and procedures.Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
