The Assistant Director of Service Learning, Leadership, and Social Action is a key leadership position responsible for advancing community engagement, curriculum development, social action, and leadership development initiatives for students at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Assistant Director will provide progressive, innovative, and strategic leadership in the Volunteer Resource Center, including the management of current programs and the development of new campus-wide service learning initiatives for CU Boulder students. This position requires a dedication to social justice and civic engagement work through a student-centered lens.

Reporting to the Director of the Volunteer Resource Center, this role involves overseeing program operations, supervising staff and student leaders, developing strategic partnerships, and ensuring the success of service-learning programs, experiential learning, and leadership opportunities, built resources and support for faculty, academic programs, schools, and colleges to engage in service learning. The Assistant Director plays a crucial role in promoting a culture of service, civic engagement, and social justice within the university community.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeProgram Leadership & Development

Actively foster and maintain a workplace climate that is supportive of employees and respectful of difference, as well as to create a learning environment which encourages personal development, self-reflection, and academic success.

Ensure a strategic, comprehensive, and student-centered approach to community engagement and service learning, and be knowledgeable of the theories, practices, and trends supportive of a deep learning and skill building for lifelong community and civic engagement.

Supervise and mentor professional and student staff, student leaders, and peer mentors fostering their personal and professional growth.

Develop vision and strategic direction and provide leadership for service-learning programs and initiatives including the Service and Social Action LLC, Sko Serve, leadership training and development of student peer mentors, and students staff of those programs.

Develop campus wide scalable curriculum for service-learning courses and classroom teaching experiences.

Instruct and facilitate learning experiences related to community engagement and social action.

Build collaborative relationships with faculty and academic departments to integrate service-learning into curricula demonstrating CU Serves software.

Build relationships with students within the community and connect students with community and service learning opportunities.

Develop assessment, outcomes, and metrics to measure the impact of initiatives, events, and programs for service learning and community engagement.

Devise and implement process improvements and align programs to meet current and future campus and community needs.

Strategic Partnership & Engagement

Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships between the university and community-based organizations and team members and facilitate collaboration to address community needs.

Lead in the creation, development, and integration of campus wide service learning, leadership, and social action initiatives across the CU Boulder campus community.

Support student clubs, organizations, and living learning communities focused on service, civic engagement, and social action.

Establish strong partnerships with key university campus collaborators to ensure innovative and integrative praxis for student community engagement.

Collaborate with campus partners, nonprofits, governmental agencies, and VRC staff to enhance co-curricular community and civic engagement initiatives.

Collaborate with academic departments and campus partners to coordinate target dates and programmatic events, while working with staff to market the success of research and community-engaged learning initiatives.

Ensure that community and civic engagement initiatives are mutually beneficial and aligned with university goals.

Maintain, assess, and improve pedagogical approaches to community engagement including conducting research to understand the campus-wide landscape of community engagement.

Advocate for racially and socially just community partnerships and practices.

Experiential Service Learning Management

Oversee a portfolio of service-experience trips, including recruitment and training of student leaders leading service based initiatives in collaboration with staff for which this position supervises.

Lead strategy for the recruitment, retention, and application process for all student leaders and applicants across all trips, with the support of the Experiential Service Learning student coordinators.

Develop curriculum, training, and campus wide standard processes for service learning education, experiential education, and resources for faculty to enhance service engagement and research opportunities.

Teach weekly training and courses for student leaders in the Experiential Service Learning programs within the VRC and LLC.

Builds and maintains effective mutually reciprocal relationships with community partners in our local community and across the state and country.

Develop and implement risk management protocols for off-campus engagement activities including domestic and international service learning experiences.

Collaborate with faculty, and academic administration in the development, implementation, and assessment of service learning curricular elements for a living learning community which supports service learning and co-curricular engagement.

Establish strong relationships and communication with the residence life staff, student leaders, and faculty partners supporting the community development.

Develop learning outcomes and collaborate with academic partners on living learning community development and learning integration.

Ensure compliance with risk management policies and prepare necessary travel documentation.

Use technology platforms to support program management and student engagement.

Budget & Other Duties

Supervise budget for the area, and ensure responsible planning and spending of fiscal resources in line with all University policies and applicable local, state, and federal laws.

Meet target dates for all requests for reports, data, publications, and budgets and provide timely/pertinent budgetary information to staff as necessary throughout the year.

Align programming and events with strategic plans for the campus and division.

Assist with assessments and evaluations to determine proper and adequate services and resources are being provided.

Support the work of the Volunteer Resource Center and Student Affairs and represent the center and division effectively in various settings.

Participate in professional development and serve on relevant national associations, on committees in the division of student affairs, and on campus wide efforts that enhance the work of service learning, civic engagement, social action.

Evening and weekend hours are required for this position to meet student availability.

What We Require

At least a bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.

6+ years of professional, job related experience.

Additional licenses, certifications, essential or critical services, motor vehicle or financial checks, and campus security authority status may be required as described in the approved position description.

Demonstrated dedication to community engagement and social justice.

Experience and passion for working with undergraduate students.

Exceptional interpersonal relationship-building skills and experience working with a wide range of constituents, including students, faculty, staff, community members, and nonprofit community partners.

Experience communicating with and supporting people from diverse backgrounds.

Experience in curriculum development and instruction.

Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.

Experience and comfort with digital and technology tools, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Suite, project management tools, including social media, data analytics tools, and volunteer management software (GivePulse is a plus).

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced setting.

Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.

Experience in program development that is responsive to local realities and involves responding to a variety of constituents and viewpoints.

Experience working with collegiate-level teaching faculty members to develop community-engagement opportunities related to their courses.

What We Would Like You to Have

Terminal degree, Ed.D or Ph.D with experience in experiential education, leadership, service learning, or community engagement programs.

6 years of professional experience in service-learning or related field.

Proven experience in curriculum development, classroom teaching, and community partnership management.

Experience in establishing and maintaining a program budget.

Demonstrated dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Experience supervising or advising students, professionals, or groups.

Proven understanding and development of risk management policies and procedures for service or volunteer-based programs.
