Senior Director of Development

for our client, the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County (HSVB). This role is pivotal in advancing HSVB’s mission by leading the strategic direction of fundraising efforts. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will be responsible for creating and implementing a comprehensive financial development program to secure diverse funding streams that fuel HSVB’s life-saving animal welfare initiatives. By fostering meaningful relationships with donors, managing corporate and foundation giving, and overseeing community engagement efforts, the Senior Director will ensure sustainable growth and long-term success in supporting HSVB’s mission to strengthen the human-animal bond through protecting, advocating, and caring for animals.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Responsible for the strategic direction, growth, and overall management of the Development department, including goal setting, strategy identification, and benchmarking.Prepare and manage the department’s annual budget, ensuring the financial health of the department through accurate charitable income and expense tracking, reporting, and monitoring.Supervise, guide, evaluate, and counsel department staff; encourage professional growth of staff; research training opportunities; create and evaluate staff goals and objectives; and maintain adequate staffing within your department.Equip your staff with knowledgeable about HSVB’s history, philosophy, programs, services, and current activities; enabling them to professionally communicate with donors and the public.Keep the CEO and board informed on key trends, challenges, and activities, while recommending and implementing policy or procedural improvements.Lead and improve donor cultivation, research, and recognition efforts for individuals, corporations, and foundations to secure funding.Identify and research prospective grantors, matching program needs and prospect’s interests.Schedule, track, and respond to grant funding timelines for proposal development, submission and reporting.Provide content and communications regarding HSVB website, newsletters, press releases and social media to promote area of responsibility and ensure compliance with grant requirements.Prepare letters of inquiry, proposals, acknowledgements and reports for grants, donor-advised funds, corporate matching gifts, and solicited corporate support.Cultivate and manage relationships with foundations, corporations, and workplace-giving programs to secure ongoing support and drive new funding opportunities.Maintain accuracy and completeness of the fundraising database and donor tracking systems, collaborating with staff to expand and optimize functionality as needed.Solicit gifts on behalf of HSVB, both individually and in conjunction with the CEO, other staff, board members and fundraising volunteers.Adhere to all relevant regulations and laws; remain accountable to donors; ensure transparency in all fundraising activities; uphold ethical principles.As part of the senior management team, contribute to organization-wide strategic planning and implementation to ensure that fundraising initiatives directly support HSVB’s animal welfare programs and strengthen community engagement.Other duties as assigned.Job Qualifications:Education and Experience:Bachelor’s degree plus minimum of 5 years of experience in non-profit fundraising.Proven ability to recruit major gifts/donors, raise private donations, and to develop and manage donor relationships.Capital campaign experience is a plus.CFRE certification is desirable.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Proven knowledge of the principles and practices of non-profit fund development (animal sheltering development a plus).Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking.Adherence to ethical standards for fundraising professionals.Experience with a fund development database (Donor Perfect is desirable).Strong learning aptitude.Ability to meet deadlines; ability to set and accomplish work in order of priority; professionally maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure and changing conditions.Excellent management/leadership skills including, but not limited to, short and long-term planning; staff selection, direction, motivation and evaluation; and financial management.Able to work a flexible schedule for some occasional weekend and evening activities.Hold a valid Florida Driver’s License and have an insurable driving record.Compensation and Perks:$85,000 - $90,000 salary, based on qualifications and expertise.Full-time.Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance.Employee assistance program.Life insurance.Paid time off.Retirement plan.Disclaimers: AlphaStaff, Inc. and the HSVB are equal employment opportunity employers and do not discriminate against any applicant or employee based on race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, national origin, age, past or present military service, disability, genetic information, or any other basis protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
