Job Description Summary

The Associate Director of Major Gifts and Special Projects works to significantly expand the pool of regional, national and international prospects to support a major capital campaign and key Museum programs. Working closely with the Museum’s Director, Senior Director of Development, and Associate Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving, the Associate Director of Major Gifts and Special Projects will implement a dynamic, innovative, regional and national philanthropy plan for raising major gifts, staffing a high profile volunteer campaign cabinet and liaising with major gifts officers across the University of Pennsylvania. The Associate Director of Major Gifts and Special Projects will be fluent in the language of the Penn Museum and its mission to transform understanding of the human experience.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

Manage cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of a starting portfolio of at least 75 donors with capacity to give at least $100,000 over five years, with a growth strategy to develop the portfolio of actively managed prospects up to 250 and close a minimum of $1.5 million per year by three to five years into the job.

In collaboration with the Senior Director of Development, staff a high-level volunteer Campaign Cabinet to identify, cultivate and solicit other prospects involved.

In collaboration with the Senior Director of Development and Associate Director for Major Gifts and Planned Giving, develop special events for major gift prospects and donors.

Coordinate moves management team process, including prospect identification, ratings, volunteer assignments and strategic planning.

Complete call reports after visits/calls with major gift prospects and develop strategies for closing gifts.

Prepare proposals, written materials and letters to prospective donors.

Coordinate the preparation of prospect research.

Collaborate with other advancement staff to develop fundraising collateral (brochures, letters, articles, acknowledgements, webpage management, etc.)

Work with the Senior Associate Director for Institutional Giving to create a fundraising project management process and to track fund raising progress against it.

Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Development.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 5 to 7 years of fundraising experience including major and planned gifts, and extensive volunteer management experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must have proven ability to work directly with senior board members and external funders, and the ability to function independently, yet work in a centralized development structure. A baccalaureate degree is required and fundraising experience with a cultural organization or museum is preferred. The Museum needs a dynamic self-starter who requires minimal direction to achieve maximum results. The Director of Major Gifts will be fluent in the language of the Penn Museum and its mission to transform understanding of the human experience. Other requirements: strong administrative experience and ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize a successful approach to achieving fundraising goals; valid driver's license; ability to travel both locally and nationally and to staff events as needed including weekend and evening hours.
