OVERVIEW

The Smithsonian Institution is a diverse museum and research complex dedicated to the increase and diffusion of knowledge. The National Postal Museum (NPM) is dedicated to the preservation, study and presentation of postal history and philately. This position serves as the NPM Director of the Department of Education, Engagement and Visitor Services (DEVS). The position leads and manages the Department in the development and implementation of educational, general audience and visitor engagement programs and initiatives.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Management and Supervision of DepartmentSupervises assigned department staff and volunteers, assigns projects, provides technical work direction, and ensures staff is informed of appropriate operating plans, procedures and instructions.Serves as a member of museum management team, advising the director and deputy director on museum wide budgets and priorities.Advocates for the visitor, including serving as the NPM Accessibility Coordinator and the Minors Protection Manager.Education Products and ProgramsLeads and directs a team of professional staff regarding educational programming and resources.Responsible for coordinating with other Smithsonian museums and partner schools for the long-term development of NPM educational programming.Visitor Services and EngagementLeads and directs a team of professional staff regarding NPM’s Visitor Services products and programming.Develops plans to increase visitor satisfaction and continuously reviews improving approaches to the services, operations and experiences at NPM.Public ProgrammingLeads and directs a team of professional staff regarding NPM’s public programs, workshops, tours and Special Public Events.Collaborates with senior NPM staff members and establishes relationships with experts in SI and other museums.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

For the Supervision duty, required experience:Ability to supervise staff in an educational department of a museum or museum-related organization.For the Education Products and Programs duty, required experience:Knowledge to develop Educational Products and Programs for a museum.For the Public Programming duty, required experience:Knowledge to manage Public Programs in a museum.For the Visitor Services and Engagement duty, required experience:Knowledge to manage museum visitor policies, procedures and protocols.Applicants who wish to qualify based on education completed outside the United States must be deemed equivalent to higher education programs of U.S. Institutions by an organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials.The Smithsonian Institution values and seeks a diverse workforce.
