Director of Risk Management

Job Summary:The Director of Risk Management is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of the facility’s risk management program. This includes identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks that could affect the safety, security, and compliance of the skilled nursing facility. The director works closely with leadership and staff to ensure adherence to regulatory requirements, best practices, and the promotion of a culture of safety.

Key Responsibilities:Risk Assessment and Analysis:Conduct regular risk assessments to identify potential risks to residents, staff, and the facility as a whole. Analyze data from incident reports, safety inspections, and audits to identify trends and areas of concern. Develop and maintain a comprehensive risk register, documenting identified risks, their potential impact, and mitigation strategies.Policy Development and Implementation:Develop, implement, and enforce risk management policies and procedures in line with federal, state, and local regulations. Ensure that all staff are aware of and adhere to risk management policies through training and ongoing education.Incident Investigation and Reporting:Lead investigations into incidents, accidents, and near misses within the facility. Ensure that all incidents are thoroughly documented and reported to appropriate regulatory agencies as required. Develop corrective action plans to address root causes of incidents and prevent future occurrences.Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:Monitor changes in regulations and ensure the facility remains compliant with all applicable laws and standards related to risk management and safety. Prepare for and participate in inspections, surveys, and audits conducted by regulatory bodies. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and best practices in risk management.Training and Education:Design and deliver training programs for staff on risk management topics, including safety protocols, emergency procedures, and incident reporting. Promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement within the facility. Provide ongoing education to staff on emerging risks and changes in regulations.Insurance and Claims Management:Manage the facility’s insurance programs, including liability, workers’ compensation, and property insurance. Oversee the process of filing, managing, and resolving insurance claims. Work with insurance providers to ensure adequate coverage and manage premium costs.Emergency Preparedness:Develop and maintain the facility’s emergency preparedness plan, ensuring readiness for potential emergencies such as natural disasters, fires, or infectious disease outbreaks. Coordinate and lead emergency drills and exercises to ensure staff preparedness. Serve as a key point of contact during emergencies, coordinating response efforts and communication.Quality Improvement:Collaborate with the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) team to identify areas for improvement in care and services. Participate in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing risks and enhancing resident care.Data Management and Reporting:Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all risk management activities, including incident reports, investigations, and training records. Prepare and present reports on risk management activities and outcomes to the facility’s leadership team. Utilize data analytics to drive decision-making and improve risk management practices.Qualifications:Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Nursing, Public Health, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.MUST:

have experience as a Director of Nursing in skilled nursing settingExperience:

A minimum of 5 years of experience in healthcare risk management, with at least 2 years in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting.Certification:

Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) or equivalent certification is strongly preferred.Skills:

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.Knowledge of healthcare regulations and risk management principles.Ability to lead and motivate teams.Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools.

Working Conditions:The Director of Risk Management typically works in an office environment within the skilled nursing facility but may need to be on-site in various departments to conduct assessments, training, and investigations.
