For the first 6 months, the incumbent will be scheduled Mon-Fri between 8am-5pm (exact starting time to be coordinated with training staff). After training is completed, the start-end times may be adjusted slightly based on the operational needs of the division and the incumbent.

Job Summary:Provides support to Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) students and faculty in the MLS Teaching Laboratory under the supervision of the Laboratory Coordinator. Ensures smooth operation of laboratory courses in the areas of hematology, immunology, immunohematology, chemistry, body fluids analysis, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, hemostasis, parasitology, and mycology. Performs routine clinical laboratory assays and quality control assurance activities using manual and automated methods and procedures. Assists students in learning laboratory techniques and principles in their MLS laboratory-related coursework. Works collaboratively with other teaching laboratory staff to implement approved health and safety practices in the Teaching Laboratory.

Performs essential operational tasks and clinical laboratory test procedures, including calibration of laboratory equipment, quality control of laboratory assays, and inventory of laboratory supplies.

Maintains cultures of live microorganisms for laboratory assays.

Provides teaching support to MLS students and faculty to ensure smooth operation of laboratory sessions.

Maintains familiarity with course content for all MD LB laboratory courses (as assigned by supervising faculty).

Problem-solves and suggests solutions for common quality control and equipment failures.

Assists in evaluation and implementation of new laboratory assays, including modifications to existing procedures and documentation.

Prepares, labels, and performs quality control inspections of laboratory reagents.

Assists with annual updates of standard operating procedures and safety policies, as assigned.

Works collaboratively with faculty and staff to plan and coordinate laboratory outreach activities associated with the Medical Laboratory Science program.

Participates in work-related conferences and education.

Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Laboratory environment. Exposure to chemicals and biohazardous biological samples used in a laboratory setting employing appropriate universal precautions.

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required:Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion, walking, standing, sitting, bending, lifting. Seldom: Reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications:Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science; American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) certification as a Medical Technologist or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are required. ASCP certification equivalency for this position may be one year of lab experience. This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements. Preferences:

ASCP Medical Technologist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent.

1-3 years in a laboratory setting, or equivalent education or training.

Experience as a medical laboratory scientist and clinical laboratory testing preferred.
