Stockton, CaliforniaThe Amelia Ann Adams Whole Life Center (AAAWLC) is dedicated to promoting health, education, social justice, and faith/healing within the San Joaquin County community.As part of our commitment to addressing the needs of our community, we are excited to announce an opening for a Youth Policy Specialist in our Black Youth Protecting Black Peace Project (BYPBP). This initiative focuses on improving the mental health outcomes for Black youth aged 10-17 by influencing policy within the juvenile justice system, educational institutions, and faith-based organizations.Project DescriptionThe Youth Policy Specialist will play a pivotal role in the BYPBP project, a project aimed at enhancing the mental health services available to Black youth in Stockton through policy assessment and reform. This role involves close collaboration with various stakeholders including faith-based organizations, educational bodies, and the juvenile justice system to ensure that policies are trauma-informed and promote mental health rather than criminalize it.ResponsibilitiesLead the identification, assessment, and improvement of policies affecting the mental health of Black youth within the educational and faith-based sectors.Maintain relationships with key stakeholders in two faith-based organizations to create supportive policies for mental health.Train youth, clergy, and community members on issues related to mental health and advocacy.Conduct listening sessions to gather insights and feedback from the community and stakeholders.Attend school board and other relevant sub-committee meetings to advocate for and influence policy changes.Assist in the facilitation of youth leadership development trainings.Support youth in developing and implementing educational campaigns focused on mental health and policy change.Advocate for the implementation of restorative and public health-based policies within schools.Report writing/success stories.Perform other duties as assigned.Desired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field; Preferred.Experience in policy analysis, community advocacy, or a related field, ideally within an educational context.Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and its application in policy and community settings.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse faith-based and educational organizations.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with proven experience in training and public speaking.Commitment to the values and mission of AAAWLC, with a deep passion for social justice and mental health advocacy.Experience working with youth. A track record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with and among a diverse group of stakeholders.Demonstrated commitment to meeting a high bar and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.Critical thinking and problem-solving ability.Knowledge of trauma, ACEs, and trauma-informed practices.Manages a high volume of work with efficiency.How to ApplyCandidates interested in making a significant impact on the mental health policies affecting Black youth are encouraged to submit a resume and cover letter detailing their qualifications and motivations for the position.
