Summary

The Childcare Director is responsible for overseeing the childcare facility to ensure that children have an educationally excellent, safe and fun environment to learn and socialize with others. Director's duties include hiring qualified childcare staff, implementing all state childcare regulations, working with the Director of Finance and Operations and/or Childcare Executive Director to set budgets, and proactively communicating with families to accommodate their child's needs.

This is a full-time salaried position that reports to the Executive Childcare Director or Director of Finance and Operations in the absence of an Executive Director.

Duties

Oversee Staff

Ensure staff complies with state and federal requirements.

Schedule weekly staff in line with scheduled student attendance.

Manage teacher/student ratios.

Manage breaks (scheduling staff to assist with this).

Monitor supply and technology needs for staff/classrooms.

Plan and implement monthly staff meetings.

Curriculum/Classroom Management

Implement educationally appropriate lessons and education strategies for all age groups.

Monitor staff lesson binders by classroom.

Audit/spot check classrooms to ensure staff are following the planned lessons and routines.

Assist teachers when behavioral issues arise.

Manage Facilities/Food Program

Maintain safety protocol within the building including classrooms.

Create and enforce checklists such as cleaning, etc. within the classroom.

Work with custodial help to ensure facility maintains clean environment.

Keep all files up to date and in compliance with state requirements.

Plan and distribute food menus with the nutritional value needed including a variety of foods.

Be diligent of food supply status and replenish food as needed on a weekly basis (Grocery List on Thursdays).

Submit grocery order to Gordons, Walmart or Kroger.

Replenish non-food supplies when level is low.

Maintain Security system: issue key cards, camera maintenance and video file maintenance.

Assist with Financial Responsibilities

Responsible for keeping tuition current with students; following up on vouchers (CCDF), private payor tuition and other government subsidies such as CACFP (food program).

Assist financial director with annual budget and assist with compliance with established budget.

Approve expenses to be paid/incurred.

Marketing the Childcare Center

Market childcare to recruit new students (Facebook, local newspaper, etc.) in cooperation with Boundless Communications Director.

Monitor wait lists and follow up with families.

Market for employee recruitment.

Communication and Meetings with Families/Teachers

Available to answer questions/concerns parents may have.

Available to assist teachers with their lessons, classroom issues, etc.

Schedule parent/teacher conferences for classrooms.

Establish a positive relationship with each child's family.

Ensure families are notified of changes in programs, tuition, etc.

Share ideas with families on ways they can get involved.

Director will meet with families/teachers to keep parents up-to-date on their child's development and progress including ways to address any learning or behavioral issues.

Make sure communication is fluid with staff so they know if director/assistant director is not at the center or not available (for example, in a meeting).

Education & Training

Keep abreast of current knowledge in the field of Early Childhood Education.

Staff required to complete a minimum of 20 training hours annually; Director puts procedures in place to ensure this is accomplished.

Work with Executive Director and Director of Finance and Operations to create and/or update onboarding training for teachers and new directors/assistant directors.

Train new hires; Director and/or Assistant Director will train new staff. Training will be one on one with the new hire to ensure new employee is aware of job duties and accessible for questions, comments, etc. New hire should not just be thrown into the classroom.

Monitor new hires to make sure they are meeting job expectations.

Make sure staff is aware and follows state requirements; director is responsible for staff compliance to these requirements.

Requirements

Business Management: the Childcare Director runs all aspects of childcare facility from setting up the security system to assisting with budget creation. Besides being detail-oriented and organized, they need to keep up with federal and state daycare laws and requirements. Business management includes the ability to provide both encouragement and oversight to staff. Creating a positive employee environment requires clear expectations, high standards, equal treatment, good coaching, and a willingness to address difficult situations quickly and directly.

First Aid: the Childcare Director must have a good knowledge of childcare safety requirements and be up to date on first aid protocol.

Excellent Communication Skills: as the face of the childcare facility, the Director must be an excellent communicator, being able to confidently take prospective parents on a tour, write newsletters and run staff meetings.

Good crisis management: the Director must have strong crisis management abilities, being able to remain cool and composed in a crisis.

Classroom Experience: since the Director is responsible for hiring teaching staff, they need to know how to handle a group of children, understand childhood development and have the know-how to establish classroom structure.

Organizational Skills: the Director deals with a fast-paced environment in which many details must be tracked and recorded. The director must be organized and able to multitask.

Computer Literacy: the Director must be able to work effectively with computers, including Childcare Management Systems, and have the aptitude to learn other software systems like Microsoft 365.

Minimum Education Requirement: Associates Degree in Early Childhood/Education/Related Field.

Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood/Education or related field.

2 years as a Childcare Director/Owner/Business Owner.
