Description

Under direction to provide lead supervision and participate in the work of technicians responsible for installing and maintaining telecommunications and other related equipment.

Typical Tasks

Provides lead supervision to technicians specializing in telecommunications equipment such as PBX equipment, voice mail systems, uninterrupted power supplies, telephone handsets, network cabling, public address, intercom, T1 circuits, optical fiber and other related equipment and services;

Receives trouble reports and installation project assignments;

Makes service arrangements with user agency;

Establishes priorities, work schedules and assigns technician(s);

Provides instructions and guidance on anticipated problems and expected results;

Orders parts;

Inspects work in the field and assists technicians, on problems requiring advanced knowledge and experience;

Works as field supervisor on major installations;

Trains new employees;

Constructs or modifies telecommunications and other related equipment;

Performs research and tests on equipment;

Evaluates equipment performance and checks test equipment;

Compares installation to initial design;

Assists engineers in researching information required for design projects;

Prepares reports on completed assignments;

Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards

Training and experience equivalent to completion of two years of college with course work in telecommunications technology, and three years of experience in the installation and repair of telecommunications equipment within the last five years.

Possession of: a valid California driver's license upon appointment.

Knowledge of:

Tools, equipment, practices and methods of installing telecommunications equipment, including data cabling and fiber optics, sound and paging systems;

Equipment testing and evaluation techniques;

Safety procedures such as handling electrical energy devices.

Ability to:

Read and draw schematic diagrams;

Perform skilled shop work in the construction, maintenance and repair of telecommunications equipment;

Perform research and tests on equipment;

Keep records and write reports;

Communicate clearly both in oral and written form;

Maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Supervise the work of others.

Willingness to:

Work at odd or irregular hours;

Be subject to call 24 hours a day.
