Responsibilities:

Review/summarize lifestyle, medical, non-medical, and financial data to accurately evaluate/classify/rate each risk to determine insurability and targeted carriers.

Successfully deliver competitive outcomes by applying your underwriting and product experience.

Identify and address underwriting challenges within life applications/questionnaires, lab results, exams, and medical records.

Advocate and negotiate with insurance carriers on formal and informal offers.

Consult with agents/brokers, internal staff, and medical professionals to gather additional information.

Educate yourself on the latest medical advancements and changes related to underwriting.

Apply knowledge and experience to provide consistent and accurate advice on pre-sale inquiries.

Utilize web-based Agency Management System (AMS) to document relevant case information.

Maintain a sense of urgency without losing attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task.

Engage the expertise of senior underwriting staff in case consultations and discussions.

Work in a team-focused environment and contribute beyond your assigned workload.

Produce holistic case-by-case solutions that incorporate all dynamics of risk assessment.

Participate in mentoring and allow newer underwriters or case managers to job shadow.

Involvement in Underwriting projects and training.

Ability to escalate cases with carrier partners as needed.

Continuously seek ways to expedite and improve processes and service.

Foster a relationship focus with internal teammates, external customers, and carrier partners.

Partner with marketing, sales, underwriting, and New Business leadership to drive additional revenue and evaluate overall service.

Talents and Abilities:

Positive attitude and willingness to work in a team environment.

Ability to communicate confidently, both verbally and in writing.

Willingness to take initiative and exhibit creative thinking.

Additional industry accredited education (LOMA, ALU, CLU) is a plus.

Strong phone and computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Prior experience in using online reinsurance manuals and carrier-specific manuals.

Basic knowledge of the life insurance industry and key carriers.

Prior exposure to multi-faceted underwriting including medical, lifestyle, non-medical, and financial considerations.

A minimum of 10 years prior experience in life insurance underwriting is required.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in nursing, medical or life sciences, or a related field with 10 years of life insurance underwriting; or 15 years of relevant work experience.
