SUMMARY:Responsible for project lifecycle, including approval, planning, and execution of product development projects of space, defense and industrial products including components, subsystems, and systems. Will typically work in a multidisciplinary team setting that includes mechanical, materials, electrical and embedded system/software engineers. Shall be self-motivated and must be able to handle multiple projects with minimum supervision to perform the duties.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Responsible for all aspects of project lifecycle and product development phases that span from TRL4 (Component / Technology Validation) to TRL9 (Actual System Proven in Operational Environment): validate component/technology in laboratory environment (TRL4), validate component/technology in relevant environment (TRL5), demonstrate system/subsystem prototype in a relevant environment, ground, or space (TRL6), handoff the design to Product engineering and provide support for TRL7 (system prototype demonstration in operational environment), TRL8 (system qualification), and TRL9 (actual system proven in operational environment) phases.Review, analyze, and verify compliance and acceptance of technical specification requirements.Conceptualize new and preliminary designs/layouts and work with Design Team to prepare initial design using initial 3D CAD tools to convert the specification into product Design using industry standards.Evaluate designs keeping the acceptance, development, and qualification test plans in consideration.Write technical specifications for components such as pressure/temperature transducers etc.Review engineering drawings for approval using latest GD&T standards.Review tolerance stack analysis to meet functional requirements.Coordinate with Design Team for Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Assembly (DFA), Cost (DTC), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Reliability (DFR) as integral part of design process.Work closely with Materials and Process (M&P) and V&V engineering to propose alternate materials & approaches to accomplish better product functionality.Review and approve new product development designs using Engineering Order (EO) process.Review Engineering Change Request (ECR), Engineering Change Notice (ECN) to approve drafting/design, revise design, or incorporate changes/modifications to existing 3D models and drawings that are provided by the Design Team.Capable of attending Engineering Review Board (ERB) and Change Control Board (CCB) with justified dispositioning knowledge.Coordinate design modifications with Design Group based on proven analysis and incorporate better features to optimize and design cost.Manage engineering product life cycle (ECR, ECN, ECO, MRB, NCR etc.)Coordinate with manufacturing, procurement, and quality control to take design from concept to production.Develop and maintain technical data including detailed drawings, assembly drawings, parts lists, tooling, and SDRLs.Create design review data packages for internal and customer design Reviews.Be the technical interface with customer’s technical representatives and lead customer reviews.Hold internal design reviews (CEBs) and customer reviews including Preliminary Design Review (PDR), Critical Design Review (CDR), and Test Readiness Review (TRR).Prepare Acceptance test Procedures (ATP), Proto-flight Test Procedure (PTP), and Qualification Test Procedures (QTP).Coordinate with test engineers to perform acceptance, prototype and qualification testing and prepare test reports.Coordinate with Program Management Office (PMO) for WBS, schedule, and to prepare required SDRLs.Support the development of product specific manufacturing instructions and In-Process Test Procedures (IPTP).Work with suppliers to drive design decisions resulting in lower cost more producible products, support procurement in selecting/recommending vendors.Solve engineering problems, investigate failures, and take corrective actions.QUALIFICATIONS:• Experience in the design of mechanical components and assemblies for propulsion system applications, fluid control valve technology, and electromechanical systems.• Experience with 3D CAD software in the creation of 3D parts, assemblies, and drawings.• Experience using SolidWorks and Autodesk Inventor desirable.• Experience with product design and process FMEA, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Cost (DFC), Design for Reliability (DFR) methods and techniques.• Some understanding of electronic concepts is desirable.• Experience with, and understanding of, military, aerospace, and industry specifications such as RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810.• Experience with MathCAD, Matlab Simulink, AMESIM, and FEA is preferred.• Ability to interpret and analyze mechanical specifications and data, to communicate effectively with customers, suppliers and at all levels within the company and good technical writing skills.• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA).• Knowledge of various materials (Metals, alloys, polymers, plastics etc.) and their characteristics.• Experience with precision assembly in a cleanroom environment is beneficial.Education and Experience:Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in mechanical or aerospace engineering (Master’s degree preferred). Minimum of five (5) years of product development, project, design, or related engineering experience. Experience in designing and analyzing of mechanical/electromechanical multi-part mechanisms, fluid control valves/components/systems and assemblies.LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.REASONING ABILITY:Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time, walk and reach with hands and arms as well as some bending and/or stooping, Occasional light lifting of reams of paper or books up to 20 lbs. or equivalent may be required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.WORK ENVIRONMENT:Majority of work is performed in a typical office environment with no major sources of discomfort.
