Position OverviewThe Lead Network Engineer is responsible for the architecture, design and support of the enterprise network infrastructure. The individual successfully leads by expertise and example, a team of network engineers and vendors while also collaborating with cybersecurity and other IT team members on testing, integration, and deployment of network systems. This Lead monitors the network infrastructure for system performance, utilization, and compliance. The individual serves as the primary internal expert and advisor to less seasoned engineers and analysts and is the key liaison to the Network Engineer Manager. The individual recommends updates and architectural changes to provide a forward-looking and robust network environment. Additionally, the Lead Network Engineer manages the resources under their area of responsibility in order to ensure that the necessary support of new systems is available. Further, the position includes technical leadership and execution of assigned projects.

Key Responsibilities

Analyzes and creates solutions to extremely complex problems and relationships between integrated systems/networks.

Provide expert level system administration and maintenance for the enterprise infrastructure components to include multiple data centers in both an HA and DR configuration.

Perform firmware, hardware, and OS upgrades, and required patch management.

Monitor overall network performance and perform the necessary tuning.

Maintain backup copies for all network component configurations.

Assess the network performance metrics and perform capacity planning.

Be actively involved in implementing/testing disaster recovery (DR) process.

Regularly test the validity of network redundancy and failover circuit testing.

Employ excellent analytical skills to define system network requirements and objectives for network requirements and objectives for system, network and interface maintenance or enhancement requests and communicates to clients and appropriate technical staff.

Participates in contract negotiations with vendors.

Reviews specifications and documentation for completeness and accuracy.

Identifies and assigns appropriate staff resources required to realize project goals.

Identifies, monitors and manages project risks from organizational and technical stances.

Acts as a leader of cross-functional teams including process improvement teams.

Any supervisory responsibilities may include managing direct and indirect reports and the scope, delivery and quality of all team projects and tasks.

Performs 3rd level networking support.

Performs 24/7 on-call support if applicable.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages cross-functional work teams and may or may not have direct reports.

Any supervisory expectations will include delegation, monitoring and managing multiple projects and teams, managing client expectations, coaching staff and enforcing compliance with department standards and hospital policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology or related discipline; equivalent experience acceptable.

Ten Years minimum in-depth experience performing network engineering (hardware and software), network design, planning and implementing WLANs, LANs, and WANs using the latest technology.

6+ years of experience in related planning, analysis, configuration, installation, management and coordination work.

Ability to handle basic network administration tasks to fulfill backup role if needed.

Demonstrated experience working well with customers of varying levels of technical expertise in high pressure situations and complex environments.

Demonstrated experience in managing teams and projects.

LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION REQUIRED

Certifications Desired:

Cisco Certified Internetwork Professional or Expert

Brocade Certified Network Engineer

Extreme Networks Certifications

Systems: Windows, UNIX, Linux

Additional certifications may be required (Avaya) in order to support higher complexity projects or issues.

Dynamic and Static Network Routing, AAA, Netflow, QOS, VOIP, WPA-2, IEEE tested standards.

Firewall and DMZ design, support and maintenance.

Ethernet and WLAN technology, terminology, encryption and standards.

Knowledge of project development life cycle methodologies desired.

A demonstrated knowledge of cross application/system workflow and system interface relationships is required.

Work EnvironmentMay be required to travel to/from and work in the various Connecticut Children’s locations, including patient care areas. May be required to travel for mandatory certifications.
