Job Description - Chair & Professor, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (24000001F0)The OpportunityThe University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine seeks a collaborative academic leader to serve as its next Chair Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for the College of Medicine. The incoming chair will partner with university and clinical affiliates to expand a modern Department of Pathology that serves the needs of the community for both traditional and cutting edge anatomic and clinical pathology.UTHSC is Tennessee’s only public, statewide, academic health system, dedicated to delivering groundbreaking discoveries with global impact and training the next generation of health science leaders. It is an exciting time for UTHSC as the main Memphis campus has invested significantly in renovation and construction, including a new Translational Science Research Building and a dedicated Multi-Disciplinary Simulation Building. The main UTHSC campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Health Professions, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. The Health Science Center is part of the statewide, multi-campus University of Tennessee system, and has multiple clinical partners across the state. UTHSC has launched an aggressive campaign to double extramural research funding over the next ten years.The Department of Pathology faculty and trainees provide care in concert with multiple clinical partners, including Regional One Health, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, the Lt. Col. Luke Weathers, Jr VA Medical Center and University Clinical Health as well as The West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center. The department embraces a tripartite role in clinical service, research and education. The outstanding pathologists and doctoral level scientists who have been and will be recruited are expected to make contributions to all relevant missions as a pre-requisite to academic advancement.Reporting to the Executive Dean, the incoming Chair will support pathologists and doctoral scientists who specialize in particular clinical or research areas. Further, the successful candidate will be expected to grow the research portfolio of the department and partner closely with clinical partners to coordinate care across multiple sites. The successful candidate will be an outstanding leader with integrity, intellect and the ability to work effectively with numerous stakeholders. Qualified candidates must hold an MD or equivalent medical degree; be board certified preferably in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology and in their subspecialty and eligible for medical licensure in Tennessee; and meet University of Tennessee criteria for appointment to a tenured senior level faculty position. Candidates should seek to actively engage with the healthcare community and serve the state of Tennessee.QualificationsAn M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. from an accredited institution with board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.Eligible for licensure in Tennessee.Candidates must possess qualifications for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher at UTHSC.Reporting RelationshipsReporting to the Executive Dean, the Chair is the chief academic and executive officer for the Department of Pathology and will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department. The Chair will work collaboratively with the executive dean and other leaders within UTHSC, executive and clinical leaders within UCH, and with clinical partners to build on existing excellence in teaching, team-based research, and clinical programs, and to position the Department for ongoing success.ResponsibilitiesOversees the clinical, education and research endeavors to ensure the advancement of the contemporary department of pathology.Emphasizes and expands the focus on high quality anatomical and clinical pathology services that are consistent across clinical partners and maintain close collaboration with other departments.Establishes appropriate communication channels with physicians, staff and administration that result in trust, alignment and collaborative working relationships in the pursuit of maximally productive multidisciplinary collaboration.Supports a mission of continued growth for the Experimental Pathology Division and promotes the enhancement of research activities of the Center for Cancer Research and faculty laboratories.Promotes professional development and the continued medical education of existing faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional faculty, trainees, staff and students across the diversity spectrum to the Department. Ensures the Department is recruiting top faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals.Coaches, mentors and develops others to build internal capabilities and the talent that facilitates succession. Develops the next generation of physician and scientific leadership in the department.Ensures the application of best practices, incorporating regulatory requirements at the local, state and national level; utilizes benchmarking and data analysis derived from the College of American Pathologists, American Board of Pathology, and other sources.Promotes the adoption of innovative diagnostic, analytic, technological and communication tools across the department.Maintains and develops professional knowledge and personal competence through publications and professional organizations.Represents the department on an institutional and national level.Goals and ObjectivesEstablish credibility as a leader, clinician and communicator across the department, Health Science Centers and clinical partners. Serve as an advocate for the department throughout the organization and externally.Develop a thorough understanding of the mechanisms and structures that sustain the complex academic environment of the Health Science Center. Build strong partnerships with clinical and basic science departments to further establish patient-centric care, education and research.Build upon the department’s current research programs, promote the expansion of research programs, scholarship and collaboration with the Cancer Research Center.Serve as a key support point person for medical directors and faculty assigned to these locations for Regional One Health, Le Bonheur Children's and the Memphis VA Medical Center, promoting high quality anatomic and clinical pathology services. Assess the current clinical laboratory and anatomic pathology offerings in order to identify and implement services to assist the needs of clinical partners.Serve as the primary clinical liaison for pathology professional services offered through UCH and as the primary director for UCH affiliated laboratory services.Develop sub-specialized sign out and identify areas of recruitment needed to complement the existing clinical, educational, and research faculty.Advance a faculty development program that will allow all faculty members to reach their full potential and will foster an environment that is supportive and leads to high morale and engagement of faculty and staff.Develop and implement a robust, continuous quality improvement plan to support the department's ability to achieve and monitor outstanding clinical quality.Perform a critical review of UME, GME and fellowship education and training to identify areas for improvement. Further, work with educational leaders to foster greater interest and pursuit in pathology.Understand the importance of outstanding customer service to internal stakeholders. Adopt/enhance existing customer service standards and develop a process to ensure the department is meeting these standards.Knowledge, Work Experience, Leadership Skills and CompetenciesDemonstrated success as a leader in a complex academic environment that includes an academic medical center and community clinical partners.
