Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

The Opportunity

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Medicine seeks a collaborative academic leader to serve as its next Chair Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for the College of Medicine. The incoming chair will partner with university and clinical affiliates to expand a modern Department of Pathology that serves the needs of the community for both traditional and cutting edge anatomic and clinical pathology.

Reporting to the Executive Dean, the incoming Chair will support pathologists and doctoral scientists who specialize in particular clinical or research areas. Further, the successful candidate will be expected to grow the research portfolio of the department and partner closely with clinical partners to coordinate care across multiple sites. The successful candidate will be an outstanding leader with integrity, intellect and the ability to work effectively with numerous stakeholders.

Qualifications

An M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. from an accredited institution with board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.

Eligible for licensure in Tennessee.

Candidates must possess qualifications for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher at UTHSC.

Responsibilities

Oversees the clinical, education and research endeavors to ensure the advancement of contemporary department of pathology.

Emphasizes and expands the focus on high quality anatomical and clinical pathology services that is consistent across clinical partners and maintains close collaboration with other departments.

Supports a mission of continued growth for the Experimental Pathology Division and promotes the enhancement of research activities of the Center for Cancer Research and faculty laboratories.

Promotes professional development and the continued medical education of existing faculty members and attracts highly motivated and exceptional faculty, trainees, staff and students across the diversity spectrum to the Department.

Ensures the application of best practices, incorporating regulatory requirements at the local, state and national level; utilizes benchmarking and data analysis derived from the College of American Pathologists, American Board of Pathology, and other sources.

Demonstrated success as a leader in a complex academic environment that includes an academic medical center and community clinical partners.

Displays a passion for faculty development and promoting the growth of others.

Possess and be able to articulate a clear vision for growth, expansion and evolution of a modern department of pathology.

An approachable and enthusiastic leader with an open and direct communication style.
