Job Summary:A Research Technologist 3 position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Paul Burridge in the Department of Pharmacology and the Center for Pharmacogenomics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL.Successful candidates will participate in NIH- and AHA-funded projects to study the application of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) in predictive medicine. Our goal is to develop the next generation of tools for predicting drug responses and validating SNPs to allow the use of genomic information in personalized medicine. With these data we will probe the mechanisms of action of a range of drugs to provide individualized treatment selections and regimes to improve drug efficacy and eliminate off-target toxicity. We are looking for highly motivated and creative candidates with an interest in studying SNPs and molecular mechanisms involved in chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity using patient-specific hiPSC-derived cardiomyocytes. The role will involve hiPSC culture and cardiac differentiation, assisting with experiments, maintaining detailed records, lab management, equipment/reagent ordering, analyzing genomic information, training on a variety of high throughput and high-content screening/imaging platforms, and responsibility for health and safety.Specific Responsibilities:Following overall research objectives, independently designs, plans, conducts and troubleshoots experiments.Evaluates protocols and data obtained from groups of experiments and recommends changes to processes, procedures and techniques to improve quality and validity of results based upon overall project objectives.Using an advanced level of skill, completes the following activities:Molecular Biology:DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification and expression Southern, Northern, Western blottingPCR, RT-PCRPlasmid preparationCloning, mapping and sequencing of DNARecombinant virus production and purificationImmunology:Flow cytometryELISA, Elispot assayCytokine assayAntibody production and purificationCellular Biology:Cell culture, cell isolationFunctional studiesTransfectionHistology:ImmunohistochemistryMicroscopyAdministration:Observes experiments, collects, records, summarizes, analyzes and interprets research data.Collates relevant mathematical results.Prepares complex tables reflecting relationships of multiple tests.Draws scientific conclusions.Writes portions of grant applications.Co-authors scientific papers.Finance:Negotiates purchases with vendors.Maintains and updates portions of grant budgets.Tracks & summarizes lab supply expenses.Verifies accuracy of invoices.Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice &/or lab supplies.Supervises:Trains and directs other lab EEs and/or students in research techniques and procedures.Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required.Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 1 year lab/bench or other relevant experience.Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)Demonstrated laboratory experience;Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instructions as required by research protocols;Demonstrated computer skills, including spreadsheets and basic computations;Attention to detail and accurate record keeping;Ability to work independently and in a team environment;Manual dexterity.
