The VP, Accounting Controller will lead all day-to-day accounting operations and have primary responsibility for management of all accounting, financial controls and financial reporting. This position will work closely with program leaders and their staff, not only to educate them regarding accounting procedures but also to explore how finance and accounting can support program operations and growth. This position will coordinate closely with the VP, Financial Planning and Analysis to ensure alignment of messaging, reporting and how the Finance department as a whole can best support the organization and provide insights to its operations and mission work.

Role and Responsibilities

Oversee day-to-day functioning of accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, taxes and grants administration. Ensure compliance with program and regulatory requirements, policies and business objectives.

Responsible for effective oversight of grant accounting, billing and tracking in addition to the traditional accounting areas of general ledger, AP, A/R, payroll, cash management, taxes, etc.

Ensure that systems, processes, procedures, and controls are designed, implemented and maintained to ensure an effective and efficient control environment and produce timely, accurate and meaningful financial reports.

Primary responsibility for coordination of the annual external audit, 403b retirement plan audit and external reports such as payroll and sales/use tax filings and the Forms 990 and 5500 reports filed with the IRS annually.

Ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.

Ensure accurate and timely month-end close. Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports including metrics.

Leverage information systems including the recently implemented cloud ERP to expand current reporting to provide organizational leaders access to as much “real-time” or near real-time information as possible, facilitating better and more timely decision making.

Establish and maintain internal controls and safeguards for financial reporting, receipt of revenue, costs, grant or program budgets and actual expenditures.

Ensure balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly and that reconciling items are timely researched and resolved.

Lead annual financial audits and oversee other agency audits.

Present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner. Clearly communicate monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. Monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of Goodwill’s financial status.

Support CFO in engaging board’s audit and finance committee around issues and trends in financial operating models and delivery. Present to the audit and finance committee as requested.

Oversee all project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate and foundation grants. Ensure that all grants are in compliance with OMB Circulars and any other fiscal requirements.

Responsible for monthly grant spend reporting to appropriate users.

Monitor and coordinate the preparation, balancing and reconciliation of various accounting records; prepare or direct the preparation of records and reports for submission to various regulatory and government agencies as well as Goodwill Industries International.

Assist FP&A team as needed in preparation of annual budget.

Assist FP&A team with periodic updates to the financial forecast including income statement, balance sheet, cash flows and debt covenant compliance.

Prepare periodic bank covenant compliance reports.

Proactively ensure timely payment of required debt payments.

Demonstrate and maintain strong situational awareness to seize opportunities and mitigate financial risk to the organization.

Maintain an up-to-date cash forecast and timely alert CFO of any significant concerns.

Supervise, train and mentor accounting department staff. This includes leveraging the strengths of team members, helping to clarify roles and responsibilities and developing and implementing training programs to maximize staff potential and reach individual and organizational goals.

Provide leadership to strengthen internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization. Create and promote a positive and supportive working environment.

Demonstrate ethics and comply with the Corporate Compliance.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Social Work, Psychology, Education, Public Health or other human services related field.

Experience in advancing non-profit and governmental workforce development and advancement initiatives.

Five years demonstrated leadership experience.

Knowledge of educational, governmental, and social service agencies and programs in areas with mission delivery opportunities, including current best practices and current trends.

Ability to gather data, compile information and write reports.

Requires proficiency with MS Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Excellent organizational, problem solving and collaboration skills, including the ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies.

Maintain a high level of ethical conduct regarding confidentiality, dual-relationships, and professional stature.

Ability to communicate effectively and develop teamwork with staff members and other department supervisors/personnel.

Ability to represent the organization in a positive way to the mission related agencies and business community.

Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of information related to operations, financial matters, and personnel matters.

Physical Requirements

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and talk or hear.

The ability to cope with and tolerate moderate levels of stress is also a necessity. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
