Under the direction of the CFO, the Director of Health Information Management (HIM) is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the HIM department. This includes identifying workflow process improvements, training new staff, and employee evaluations. The Director of HIM is also responsible for directing the maintenance of all hospital patients’ medical records in accordance with hospital policies and with state and federal regulations. Works with the organization on implementing and utilizing Enterprise EHR system and keeps abreast of technologies available to enhance and maximize the use of the infrastructure/EHR.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible and accountable for the daily operations of the health information management, including inpatient and outpatient coding, transcription, release of information, and revenue cycle components, in compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations.

Works with other clinical staff on Meaningful Use measurements.

Supports and trains team members.

Manage and track team’s time off requests.

Attends trainings and provides education to team members.

Completes performance evaluations for team members and provides performance feedback throughout the year.

Responsible for researching, implementing, and utilizing Enterprise EHR.

Responsible for updating or altering settings or tables within the EHR software to meet the needs of federal regulations and/or facility requirements.

Reviews coding for accuracy, reimbursement, and healthcare provider reports.

Responsible for the integrity and quality of the electronic medical records needed to provide safe, quality care.

Actively involved in any redesign of clinical workflows and documentation methods impacting the medical record and the efficiency of the care provider.

Responsible for extracting various data from EHR for monthly/annual reporting and statistics.

Collaborates and communicates effectively between clinical experts, end-users including staff and physicians, and subject matter experts on regulatory standards and desired outcomes.

Responsible for ensuring policies and procedures are revised each time there are changes involving the electronic health record or any clinical/business application, and that changes are integrated into employee training and education.

Effectively manages the collection of health information; manages the use of prohibited abbreviations and ensures health information is accessible for needed care.

Responsible for the direct management of the health information management: performance management, coaching, goal setting, etc.

Responsible for the oversight and monitoring of patient satisfaction scores that are directly related to health information management.

Participates in the development and implementation of safety and quality improvement activities.

Reports mistakes, near misses, and adverse events, and quality and safety concerns.

Protects patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA laws.

Other duties may be assigned.

Job Requirement

Education:

Associate degree required, with bachelor’s degree preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

Requires Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification.

Experience:

Requires a minimum of 5 years of experience in Health Information Management (HIM) or closely related field in progressively responsible positions. Advanced computer skills and experience required; previous experience with CPSI preferred. At least 2 years of previous supervisory experience required. Knowledge and previous experience with Meaningful Use measurements. Possess strong leadership and relationship building skills, as well as business process analysis and change management expertise. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.

Physical Requirements:

Frequent sitting, standing and walking. May frequently lift up to 25lbs. Frequent reaching, stooping, and bending. Good visual acuity.
