Mott MacDonald is seeking a creative, highly talented Principal Transportation Planner to join our growing Northern California Practice as an in-house consultant. The role is based in San Jose and will support our exciting portfolio of Transportation Planning projects across Northern California and the West Coast. The candidate will be responsible for playing a leading role on a wide variety of transportation engineering and planning work.

The ideal candidate will have a strong transportation planning background and will be a collaborator and innovative thinker to support the growth and expansion of our transportation planning practice. This is a unique opportunity to help deliver innovative transportation solutions for both public and private sector clients.

Our current project work cuts across all aspects of transportation planning and could also include traditional travel demand modeling and/or transportation planning projects (depending on the successful candidate's qualifications). In addition, the successful candidate will work on innovative planning projects to identify, quantify, and accommodate the changes caused by emerging technologies such as connected vehicles, automated vehicles, mobility-as-a-service, and micro transit, among others.

You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas, but familiarity across the breadth of transportation planning will be beneficial. The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

Experience with long-range transportation planning, including developing visions, goals & objectives, and identifying and analyzing proposed needs and improvements.Data analytics, including transportation-related "big data" datasets and data analysis software tools.Developing, calculating, and applying transportation performance metrics, including new ways to quantify mobility.Economic analysis of transportation impacts and/or benefits.Researching transportation issues and peer practices, including both literature reviews and designing original research.Experience with scenario-based planning and transportation operations analysis.Provide executive planning consultation to public agencies on items such as business plans, technology plans, strategic planning and other transportation agency issues.May be required to support business development activities including assistance with preparation of comprehensive proposals for large projects and participation at client interviews for competitive proposals.

Minimum Requirements

Mott MacDonald provides creative and innovative cost-effective engineering solutions across various sectors throughout North America. The Principal Transportation Planner will have the qualifications including but, not limited to:

15+ years of progressively responsible transportation planning experience working in a public agency or consulting environment.Bachelors' degree in transportation, urban planning, engineering, economics or a demonstrably related field.Strong organizational skills and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.Knowledge of emerging transportation technologies and business models.Ability to juggle multiple project assignments simultaneously and manage competing priorities.Must be able to work independently.Understanding the travel demand forecasting theory/process and how individuals make transportation decisions.Experience working on multimodal transportation systems, transportation policy, financing and environmental processes.

Salary Range: $150 - 175 per hour
