Lurie Children's Hospital of ChicagoJob Description:The Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory is hiring a Medical Technologist with a strong molecular biology background and lab experience including but not limited to DNA/RNA extraction, NGS, QPCR, Microarray. Our laboratory is a high complexity CLIA/CAP accredited clinical laboratory performing cutting edge clinical diagnostic testing, developing and validating new assays.SHIFT: Monday - Friday / 8 hours/dayEssential Job Functions:Follows clinical laboratory testing procedures and policies in the performance of routine and specialized tests.Identifies source and nature of test problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action.Coordinates all technical and non-technical activities in the laboratory during the assigned shift.Applies scientific methods in problem-solving, and evaluates new methods and techniques.Maintains a quality management system in accordance with the Lurie Children's and departmental quality measurement and improvement plan.Adheres to established organizational policies in handling blood borne pathogens, biohazardous and chemical substances.Recognizes the clinical significance of each test performed, and reports results within established time-frames.Monitors productivity and ensures appropriate turnaround-times.Reviews, documents and evaluates quality control weekly.Identifies deviations from expected performance criteria, recommends, implements and documents corrective action seeking input from the manager if required.Collects, evaluates and reports monthly quality management data.Identifies and correlates possible sources and nature of test interference/problems, and makes appropriate recommendations as to course of action, based on test theory and knowledge.Maintains schedule and compliance for completion of instrument verification studies.Assigns and verifies completion of testing, completes and routes all documentation to the lab director, ensures timely assessment of results and follow through of necessary corrective actions.Reported results are accurate and complete.Reviews results for accuracy and completeness with appropriate documentation.Performs, records and monitors required quality indicators (e.g. instrument maintenance, temperature, etc.) at the prescribed time to comply with various agency and hospital regulations.Ensures weekly and monthly compliance. Is able to perform advanced trouble-shooting on instrumentation.Assures a clean work area and properly checks and ensures endorsement of pending work at the end of each shift.Assists in maintaining sufficient supplies at each work station and procurement of emergency supplies.Develops and maintains relationships with laboratory vendors. Assists in developing Lean processes.Assists the medical and scientific director(s) in preparing, reviewing, and revising the laboratory's procedure manuals.Completes competency testing and mandatory and continuing education requirements as defined by the position.Develops, coordinates, assesses and documents competency testing. Initiates and implements in the development of new procedures and protocols.Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.Assists the director(s) in complying and adherence with governmental, accreditation, and hospital standards, including the CAP, CLIA, CMS, OSHA, and JC.Assists laboratory leadership with the instruction of new laboratory personnel.Monitors and adjusts assignments during the instruction of personnel to ensure a consistent workflow.Assists the director(s) with staff recruitment, job performance monitoring, evaluation and documentation in accordance with accreditation standards.Maintains knowledge and utilizes resources to provide consultative, educational, technical and informational services as needed, to families, patients and hospital personnel.Assists the lab administration in maintaining fiscal responsibility relative to capital and operating budget and trends in productivity, volume, acuity and service.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:A bachelor's degree, or masters, preferred in a biological or medical science.
