QUALIFICATIONS :
Minimum of 21 years of age. High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Possess a valid Washington State driver's license with CDL endorsement and valid Washington State school bus driver's endorsement. Meet the physical and mental standards necessary to perform the duties, tasks and responsibilities of a school bus driver as described in this job description. Minimum of five year's of successful driving experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Operate assigned school bus in a safe and legal manner consistent with district, state, county and federal regulationsRead, understand and follow all motor vehicles laws of the State of Washington, all regulations and Washington State Laws for School Bus Drivers, the State of Washington School Bus Driver Handbook, the Tumwater School District's School Bus Driver Handbook, and Rules for students riding Tumwater School busesInspect the assigned school bus daily prior to each operation in accordance with state and district regulations and expectationsReport any mechanical defects and safety hazards immediatelyTransport passengers to and from school or other school-related activitiesMaintain discipline on the bus consistent with district policies, regulations and proceduresEstablish and maintain effective relationships with students, district staff, parents and community membersConduct post-trip inspection: verify that all passengers have departed, close windows and refuel school busMaintain and submit daily bus logs; maintain, complete and submit all forms, records, and other reports as requiredClean interior and exterior of vehicle according to department procedures and perform other such maintenance requirements as department procedure requiresAssist passengers in exiting school bus through appropriate emergency exits during drills and in case of emergencyOperate and maintain district vehicles and equipment as required; consequently insuring their safe and proper use, protecting the interest of the district regarding pilferage, loss, theft or abuse of all district vehicles, equipment and materialsObtain and maintain all licenses and certificates necessary to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilitiesComply with district safety rules and regulationsPerform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisorREQUIREMENTS:
Effective communication skillsWriting skills necessary to complete transportation/driver paperworkPossession of a good driving safety recordAbility to proficiently operate all sizes and types of school buses in the Tumwater School DistrictWillingness and ability to drive any school bus as directed by the transportation supervisor in any type of weatherHave the ability to concentrate on safe, defensive driving under various distracting circumstancesPositive attitude toward students, parents, teachers and other district staff membersTeam oriented; ability to work with a variety of peopleAbility to work with and sensitivity to cultural, developmental, religious and ethnic diversity of students, staff, and communityAbility to read and interpret mapsFlexibility to accept scheduling changes as necessary to meet district needsWillingness and ability to receive periodic retraining and updating of driving skillsWillingness and ability to perform cleaning and upkeep school bus tasksMaintain knowledge and understanding of proper operation of transportation equipment, including special education transportation equipment.Sufficient strength and agility to assist ill or physically impaired students to enter or exit a school bus through the passenger service door, and provide necessary assistance in an emergency situation and/or evacuationKnowledge of safety standards, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to pupil transportation as required in the Washington State Handbook. This includes maintaining necessary certifications and endorsements and keeping them in your possession at all timesAbility to establish rapport with students, colleagues, administrators, parents and visitorsWillingness to benefit from department supervision, evaluation programs and professional development
