POSITION SUMMARY:

The Data Director, under the direction of executive leadership, is responsible for developing the Data strategy and leading its implementation and execution to ensure Houston Food Bank (HFB) successfully meets the current and future needs of its Mission. This includes overseeing and implementing strategic plans. The Data Director manages a team that is responsible for data integrity, data standards and rules, and the identification of new collection and integration initiatives to meet the changing needs of HFB. That team executes deep-dive data projects to support HFB departments and leaders in making data-driven decisions in alignment with strategic goals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Develops, implements, and executes Data Strategy.Defines Data project scope, value, objectives, and milestones.Provides project-specific reporting and strategic goal updates to stakeholders.Maintains comprehensive project documentation, monitors scope creep, analyzes project risks, and recommended improvements.Leads design plans and processes for most effectively collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data, including strategies for ensuring complete data.Promotes a culture of data-driven discussions, healthy skepticism, intellectual curiosity, and knowledge sharing.Analyzes findings, evaluates the reliability and validity of data, specifies the range of logically possible explanations, and presents findings to peers and leadership.Responsible for collection and integration efforts at HFB and ensures that methodologies implemented represent best practices in data management and use.Leads compliance tracking with existing data agreements (data sharing agreements, business associate agreements, etc.) with partner organizations and helps facilitate the signing of new agreements.Responsible for enforcing HFB Data Privacy, Management, and Collection policies with a focus on ensuring the adequacy, accuracy, and legitimacy of data across all departments.Serves as a Statistician with responsibility for planning and conducting statistical research projects.Works with the Data Steering Committee to prioritize data use cases across HFB.Works with executive leadership to prioritize reports and other daily requests of the Data Department.Builds and manages the data budget and ensures all budgetary decisions are made to maximize funds.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages two (2) or more functions by providing guidance and/or oversight to employees and/or contractors. Develops and maintains roles, responsibilities, and expectations. Practices performance management in support of employee development, and perform administrative duties associated with being a people manager. Responsibilities include interviewing, planning, assigning, directing work, and resolving problems. Responsibilities also include sponsoring and participating in and/or supporting project teams sponsored by other management team members.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in statistics, computer science, or closely related field. Masters degree preferred5+ years of in data management and analytics5+ years of experience managing a teamHands-on experience with SQLHands-on experience with R, Python, T-SQL, DBT, or other ETL scripting languagesHands-on experience using Git and dbt for source control and CI/CDHands-on experience with SPSS, SAS, STATA, and/or other statistical reporting tools is desirableExperience in data models and reporting packages (Power BI, Tableau, Retool)JavaScript experienceExperience with API integration preferredExperience managing Amazon Web Services (AWS) or AzureRecent experience with data security standardsExperience working with Protected Health Information (PHI) and complex dataExperience managing a hybrid (cloud and on-premises) environmentDemonstrated leadership with strategic and budget planning experienceCertificates, Licenses, and Registrations:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required daily to analyze and interpret data, communicate, and remain in a standing or stationary position for a significant amount of the workday; and frequently access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the facility, use hands, wrists, and fingers to grip, type, and write. The employee must frequently lift 25 pounds. The employee will need to have the average ability to hear horns, warnings, and alerts associated with a warehouse.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While the job is generally performed in an enclosed office environment, the employee is occasionally exposed to freezers, enclosed and/or tight spaces, wet and/or humid conditions, areas in which moving mechanical parts, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals are present, strong food-related smells, and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the office environment is typically quiet, but the employee will be occasionally exposed to loud noise levels (e.g., horns, fans).

TRAVEL REQUIRED:

Minimal travel is required for this position (up to 10% of the time and on a domestic basis).

This role supports all hours of operations at the Houston Food Bank facilities as necessary and may require flexibility occasionally (e.g., in times of disaster, community events, or company events).
