GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Director of Nursing oversees and directs nursing personnel to ensure that quality resident care is consistently provided and maintained. Utilizes leadership skills to promote a team spirit among the nursing staff and other facility personnel. Knowledgeable of all state and federal regulations pertaining to skilled nursing facilities. Prepares the facility for successful surveys. Appropriately monitors the performance of the nursing staff to ensure it is in compliance with Medicare, PPS, MDS Care Planning and HIPPA regulations. Develops, writes, and implements policies and procedures in accordance with state and federal guidelines and the facility's standard of practice for resident care and nursing departmental duties and responsibilities. Participates with staff orientation programs and provides ongoing training to both licensed and non-licensed nursing personnel to enhance their skill level and provide new information regarding geriatric care and services. Assists with the development of Quality Assurance programs and ensures the programs are ongoing and provide accurate information for quality improvement.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES:
• Leads by example and develops a team environment among the nursing staff, and promotes a team spirit with all other facility departments in order to promote and maintain continuity of resident care.
• Develops and maintains daily nursing schedules to assure 24-hour coverage sufficient to meet state and federal requirements and facility standards of care. Hires, evaluates, and disciplines as needed the nursing staff.
• Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and calm within the nursing department.
• Develops and maintains positive relationships with residents, family members, facility staff, community leaders, State and Federal surveyors, physicians and other professionals through effective verbal and written communication.
• Develops, writes and implements nursing policies and procedures that follow state and federal regulations and that maintain the facilities standard of resident care.
• Develops, writes and implements quality assurance programs for continuity of care and educational programs for licensed nursing staff that will significantly heighten their skill levels.
• Oversees and directs the nursing staff to ensure compliance with all internal policies and procedures as well as compliance with all state and federal regulations.
• Ensures positive survey outcomes which reflect no deficiencies greater than a Level ''D'', no Level "A" or ''B" citation, no imposed fines, no denial of Medicare payments and no imposed Civil Money Penalties,
• Writes and implements appropriate plans of correction.
• Represents the facility and promote its goals by participating in community events and with community organizations.
• Computer proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel and lead Health Medx software.
• Acts as a mediator to resolve any resident and/or family problems, concerns and/ or conflicts in a calm, caring, understanding and professional manner.
• Ensures that the resident's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property and civil rights, including the right to wage complaints, are well established and maintained at all times.
• Develops and maintains the nursing budget including staffing levels for licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, restorative nursing assistants and ancillary medical equipment.
• Completes routine management duties to include payroll, medication destruction as needed per policy, pharmacy recommendations as needed, incident investigations, etc.
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Current California RN License in good standing with the Board of Nursing.
• At least three years experience as a Director of Nursing in a Medicare Certified Skilled Nursing Facility. Experience working in a continuing care retirement community is preferred.
• Must have experience working with and full knowledge of Title 22 and OBRA Regulations, including, but not limited to, Medicare, PPS, MDS, Care Planning and HIPPA.
• Strong ability to oversee and direct the nursing personnel to ensure quality of care is being performed consistently.
• Exhibits strong leadership skills in order to advise, guide and inspire the nursing staff to contribute their best to improving communication and job performance for the health and wellbeing of the residents.
• Must have excellent IV skills and ability to start peripheral IV’s, handle all types of central lines and administer both hydration and antibiotic IV orders.
• Strong ability to problem solve with resident/family concerns, staffing issues and staff conflicts.
• Ability to fully understand the current 3.0 MDS process and ability to complete the MDS 3.0 timely and accurately if needed in the absence of the MDS RN Coordinator or be willing to learn the MDS process in order to assist the MDS RN Coordinator in his /her absence. Experience performing MDS assessments is preferred.
