The

University of Maine at Presque Isle

is seeking to hire an

Instructional Designer . This position consults with faculty instructional designer staff and administration and advises on best design practices and accessibility for excellent student learning pathways. The successful candidate will be responsible for co-developing and delivering technical training and tutorials to distance faculty and students using supported media tools for teaching, as well as explaining how these tools work best in the Learning Management System (LMS). Work results have a direct and highly visible impact on the quality of instruction and on the student experience across teaching all modalities. This position is under the direction of the Center for Teaching and Learning Instructional Design team, faculty and other campus and System stakeholders to support excellence in teaching and accessible learning pathways for faculty and students.

This position is located on-campus.

The normal annual salary range for this position is $50,000- $55,000, depending on skills and experience. The University System provides competitive

Duties include

(not limited to):

Develop a solid working knowledge of UMPI-specific design priorities and strategic initiatives and how they are supported by the features of both Brightspace LMS, and other UMS-supported educational technologies.

Be a leader in contemporary learning theory in a higher education context.

Work one-on-one and in groups with faculty and staff to support the creation, revision, and assessment of courses, including using instructional design norms, pedagogical theory, and research-based best practices in how students learn.

Provide synchronous and asynchronous LMS/instructional technology support for faculty users.

Collaborate with CTL and UMS System staff on various committees, tests, and troubleshoot features and tools in different teaching and learning technologies.

Provide direct support and training development and communicate support needs and trends to the CTL Director and other administrative staff in a timely manner.

Assist UMPI faculty and work-study students with developing and delivering campus-specific job aides, videos, and web-based resources.

In collaboration with the CTL Director and other campus offices, assist in updating and maintaining the student-facing support Site (the eLearning Hub) and the Center for Teaching & Learning's primary WordPress site.

Assist faculty and student interest groups in developing a variety of multimedia content, including (but not limited to) video and podcast production.

Advocate at the Campus and System level for Universal Design for Learning and designing for accessibility. Serve as the UMPI Instructional Design lead for Accessibility.

Work is typically performed in an office environment with limited travel to other campuses for training, development, or committee work. Interruptions are expected to occur often, and the candidate must be able to prioritize work independently and collaborate on time-sensitive team projects. Heavy computer use daily will be required. Must adapt and respond quickly to constantly changing technology and have exemplary human-centered service and communication skills.

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelor’s degree with coursework in education, instructional technology, multimedia design, or a related area.

Two years of recent experience in a setting working with various types of computer software, including MS Office and Google suite of applications.

Recent experience designing a Learning Management System (LMS).

Experience with teaching and/or tutoring.

Ability to remain calm under pressure. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Active listening skills. Time management skills.

Ability to rapidly learn various software applications and platforms, as well as how they heuristically work together to improve teaching and learning.

Knowledge of current in-person, hybrid, and digital pedagogy, as well as a basic understanding of UDL.

Ability to work with non-technical clients (both live, hybrid, and from a distance) in a positive and solution-oriented manner.

Ability to translate a variety of content into supported, accessible multimedia formats including but not limited to video, audio, graphics, and HTML.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a project team.

Preferred:

Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Education, or related field.

Previous teaching experience in higher education.

Knowledge and understanding of the principles andragogy, adult learning, and/or CBE delivery.

Experience with administering an LMS.

Experience applying all or some of the following learning theories and models in course design for learning: Connectivism, Constructivism, the ADDIE model, Bloom’s Taxonomy, Kolb’s Learning Cycle (or Experiential Education), Cognitive Load, Backward Design and/or Gagne’s 9 Events of Instruction.

Experience with the following platforms: Brightspace, Zoom web-conferencing, Kaltura Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress.
