Purpose: The Sr. Manager, Payroll oversees and directs the payroll team in completion of the end-to-end payroll process and ensures the accurate and timely payment of both salary and hourly team members for all payroll events (including but not limited to regular, overtime, incentive, etc.) while complying with company policies and government regulations. This role also validates team member data changes such as promotions, transfers, and terminations for salary team members across the enterprise. This position collaborates extensively with leaders of Human Resources (HR), Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS), and Operations Leaders to develop efficiency gains, ensure timeliness, accuracy, and compliance in the execution of all payroll responsibilities. As a people leader, this individual will also be expected to perform supervisory duties such as performance management, team engagement, coaching, etc.

Job Responsibilities:

Payroll Management
  • Direct and oversee all day-to-day payroll functions including payroll processing, payroll general ledger coding setup, payroll policies and procedures, year-end processing, bonus processing, and other various payroll operation requirements.
  • Partner with the HRIS team to test payroll and tax software updates and enhancements.
  • Oversee the methods and procedures for process implementation, operational enhancements, and exceptional stakeholder management throughout the enterprise.
  • Stay up to date with latest state, federal, and local legal requirements by understanding new payroll-related legislation; enforce adherence to requirements and advising management on needed actions.
  • Develop processes and execute strategic direction for the payroll function in support of multi-state locations.
  • Serve as subject matter expert for all aspects of payroll laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with leaders of the HR and HRIS teams to ensure accurate and efficient interfacing between HCM software (UIKGPro) and UKG Time and Attendance software.
  • Accountability for audit support, compliance support, governance with key business partners, ensuring successful implementation of all new account developments.
  • Analyze complex pay transactions, identify issues that exist and work with various internal operational teams to identify root cause of payroll system issues, assess risk and implement mitigation plans to minimize or eliminate future occurrence.
  • Evaluate departmental processes, technology, and organization for efficiency and make recommendations and/or implement improvements as needed.
  • Analyze payroll trends against company objectives and establish goals and metrics to support those objectives.
  • Oversee all payroll and reporting systems ensuring accuracy and full compliance with state, federal, and local regulatory requirements.


Team Management
  • Manage the payroll team in completion of their daily and rhythmic tasks to deliver the end-to-end payroll process; assist in setting annual individual goals for team; motivate and inspire team to achieve high work output.
  • Assist with interviews, hiring, training, appraising, and supervising team.
  • Support department engagement action plans that produce high engagement and a strong fit to our culture and regularly monitors direct team engagement.
  • Act as the subject matter expert for key training initiatives related to payroll processes and programs.

Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or related field.
  • 5+ years of multi-state payroll experience
  • 5+ years managing teams with proof points on performance management, coaching, team development, engagement, and care.
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrable knowledge of federal, state, and local withholding, unemployment taxes and filings
  • Strong understanding of dependent upstream and downstream activities that impact and are impacted by Payroll function.
  • Ability to multitask and meet competing deadlines in a confidential/secure environment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and within tight timelines.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and experience recording payroll data into a general ledger.
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.
