Controller

Bow Valley Credit Union, Cochrane, AB


The Controller will be responsible for corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, internal management reporting, as well as tax payments and filings. The Controller will assist in the preparation of the budget and/or forecasts, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures.

MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

Key Accountabilities
  • Manages and oversees full spectrum daily accounting operations and functions, providing support/training and making recommendations for improvement and new processes as needed
  • Mentor and lead the accounting team
  • Prepares and publishes timely financial statements, including the preparation of regulatory and managerial reports and analysis
  • Leads the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes
  • Evaluates financial reporting systems and accounting procedures and makes recommendations for changes to procedures, operating systems, budgets and other financial control functions to senior managers and other department or regional managers
  • Monitors and reports on financial performance metrics
  • Supports development of short and long-term operational strategies
  • Researches technical accounting issues for compliance
  • Ensures quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
  • Coordinates activities of internal and external auditors
  • Manages and complies with government reporting requirements and tax filings


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES:
  • Analytical problem-solving skills with an impeccable attention to detail
  • Ability to set overall strategy and drive process improvement
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to provide strong leadership in the accounting team
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel


OCCUPATIONAL EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, or a related field; CPA or CMA is an asset
  • 5 + years of experience as a senior-level accounting or finance manager in addition to progressive overall combined accounting and finance experience
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures
  • Experience with preparing financial statements
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/quarter end/year end close process


The Fine Print:
  • This position is in Cochrane, Alberta
  • Working Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30am to 5:00pm
  • Must be bondable and a criminal and credit record check is required
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
