Description of Position

The Director of Multicultural Engagement and Belonging will seek to create campus awareness, understanding, sensitivity, and responsiveness to student populations who currently and historically have been marginalized and/or underserved. The work of this professional will significantly contribute to students' development through growing their sense of belonging to and engagement with the University community and fostering learning about self and others. Ultimately, this position will lead efforts to enhance student satisfaction, persistence, and timely graduation.

This is a full-time, exempt position.

Essential Functions

Plans, coordinates, and implements programming designed to support and promote multicultural learning and foster belonging and engagement for all students, especially those marginalized and underserved.

Develops and implements mentoring and retention efforts for marginalized and underserved students and serve as one of the primary contacts for first-generation students.

Provides consultation, information, mentoring, referrals, and mediation to marginalized and underserved students when needed.

Collects, analyzes, and disseminates data on multicultural and first-generation student populations (demographics, retention & persistence, graduation rates).

Participates as appropriate in efforts to educate students, faculty, and staff to help them understand and reduce/eliminate barriers to success for underserved and marginalized students with the goal of creating a place of compassion, community, and belonging.

Initiates and collaborates with departments/sectors and student organizations on cultural and heritage (day, week, or month) celebrations.

Supports multicultural student organizations, student leaders, and advisors as appropriate, and serve as advisor to the Student Cultural Diversity Association and as a resource for the SGA Student Belonging Coordinator.

Partners with various departments/sectors including Academics, Student Life, Enrollment, Retention & Persistence, Nighthawks Central, and Athletics.

Serves as a member of various campus initiatives and commissions that may be deemed appropriate.

Develops, cultivates, and maintains partner relationships with entities outside the University as deemed necessary and appropriate.

Participates in appropriate professional development opportunities and engage in professional organizations where applicable.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A degree in Communication, Psychology, Social Work, Sociology, or a similar relevant field.

Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and enthusiastically with students, faculty, parents, pastors, and other constituencies to promote collaboration.

Ability to self-start, use deductive reasoning, be calm under pressure, meet deadlines in a deadline-oriented environment, ability to accept ambiguity, and relate to a variety of personalities.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.

Must be willing to travel and work extended hours.

Computer skills, including word processing, email and internet applications.

Ability to maintain confidential information and files.

Preferred Qualifications

Current knowledge of NNU, including a high motivation and commitment to the University, including an understanding of the University’s diversity efforts.

Understanding of the Nazarene Church.

Fluency in both English and Spanish.

Compensation

Salary will be determined by the educational background and experience of each applicant and will be discussed with individual candidates as they are invited to interview for this position.
