The general salary range for the position is $58,000 - 68,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, training and education.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s most effective animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Wildlife Communications Specialist for its Affiliate, Humane Society International (HSI). This position is responsible for developing, managing, and disseminating policy-related content and communications strategies to support wildlife conservation initiatives. This role involves producing high-quality publications, engaging with stakeholders, and advocating for wildlife policies through various communication channels. The Specialist will work closely with policy experts, conservation scientists, and communication teams to ensure that policy messages are effectively communicated to target audiences.
This position will be responsible for:
Content Development:
• Researching, writing, and editing policy briefs, reports, white papers, and other publications related to wildlife conservation;
• Translating complex policy issues and scientific data into clear, compelling content for diverse audiences, including policymakers, stakeholders, and the general public;
Communications Strategy:
• Developing and implementing comprehensive communications strategies to promote wildlife policies and initiatives;
• Creating and managing content for digital platforms, including websites, social media, newsletters, and email campaigns, to enhance public awareness and engagement;
Stakeholder Engagement:
• Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), academic institutions, and the media;
• Organizing and participating in events, workshops, and conferences to advocate for wildlife conservation policies and foster collaborative efforts;
Media Relations:
• Acting as a primary point of contact for media inquiries related to wildlife policy issues;
• Developing press releases, op-eds, and media kits, and coordinate media outreach to ensure accurate and positive coverage of wildlife conservation efforts;
Policy Advocacy:
• Monitoring and analyzing legislative and regulatory developments related to wildlife conservation;
• Collaborating with policy experts to develop advocacy materials and campaigns aimed at influencing policy decisions and legislative outcomes;
Reporting and Evaluation:
• Tracking and reporting on the impact of communications and advocacy efforts, using metrics and feedback to continuously improve strategies;
• Preparing regular updates and reports for internal and external stakeholders on the progress and outcomes of communications initiatives.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Environmental Policy, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred);
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in communications, public relations, or policy advocacy, preferably within the environmental or wildlife conservation sectors;
Skills and Competencies:
Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to produce clear and engaging content on complex topics;
Strong understanding of policy processes and experience in policy advocacy and stakeholder engagement;
Proficiency in digital communication tools and platforms, including social media, content management systems, and email marketing;
Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously;
Strong interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders;
