Job Overview:Lead and coordinates activities in the surgical pathology and autopsy department. Assists pathologists/residents t withtechnical preparation of frozen sections, prosections, and performance of post mortem examination. In addition,oversees the triaging and correct apportioning of specimens for ancillary studies necessary for patient care.Ensure that [unit/department/division] is in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulationsInsure that [unit/department/division] is in compliance with all applicable policies, laws and regulations.Qualifications:Required:A Bachelor of science degree in sciences preferred. Successful completion of all Orientation Programs.At least 3 years technical experienceExcellent communication skills ( verbal and written)Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint requiredScheduling Requirements:Full TimeDay ShiftEssential Functions:Provides leadership and technical oversight of the Autopsy Services/Surgical Pathology section.Assists the pathologist in processing surgical and autopsy material for such bioanalytic procedures as microbiological cultures, blood and semen analysis, chemical and toxicological testing.Assists the pathologist in identifying, processing and sending out tissue samples for patients involved in clinical trials and ancillary tests/studies.Possesses a thorough working knowledge of the laboratory computer system and is able to perform all system functions necessary to achieve timely reporting of results.Assists the pathologist and resident in performing the autopsy as defined in the Morgue Manual; including removal of organs, weighing organs removed, post weights and placing organs/specimens in pre-labeled specimen containers.Closes incisions in body and prepares body for release to funeral home.Releases body to authorized person verifying identification by armband, toe tag and inpatient label.Maintains open lines of communication with funeral directors. Responsible for maintaining equipment and supply levels in both the gross room and the morgue.Ensures correct accessioning and preparation of surgical specimens and frozen sections for residents/attending pathologists.Assumes responsibility of troubleshooting issues that arise in both the gross room and the morgue.Works closely with technologists/technicians in the histology lab and the nursing staffing office.Participates in hospital wide initiatives to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the morgue/gross room.Assists, under direction of the pathologist, in preparing tissue blocks and/or sections for microscopic examination, including permanent and frozen sections.Ensures proper disposal of anatomic pathology specimens and waste.
