JOB SUMMARYThis individual is primarily responsible for the performance of adult and pediatric echocardiograms (TTE), transesophageal echoes (TEE), stress echo and other noninvasive cardiovascular testing such as occasional EKG and holter monitors. Colleague will be responsible for using critical thinking to thoroughly assess and quantify cardiac pathology as well as independently decide when contrast is needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSA. Performs adult and pediatric transthoracic, transesophageal, stress and contrast echocardiograms.B. Informs patient of procedures to be performed and facilitates consent.C. Provides mobile cardiovascular sonography services to outreach sites.D. Provides on call services for echo in the Medical Center.E. Maintains the ability to increase work hours during high department volumes and decrease work hours when volumes decrease. Maintains a functioning telephone to facilitate communication with the department when needed.F. Receives and records telephone requests for service and schedules patients for diagnostic studies. Performs all office related duties including chart preparation, collection of patient information, and recording of daily charges. Uses various types of computers and keyboards.G. Utilizes the Medical Center's Electronic Medical Record for documentation and charging. Utilizes the Cardiac PACS for documentation and image storage of Cardiovascular Studies.H. Follows department procedures for adjusting work schedule as needed based on patient volume by increasing or decreasing hours worked.(Example: If part time, hours may be greater than budgeted or if full time, hours could be less than budgeted at times)I. Assists students and cardiology fellows, when need, by providing an environment for learning and sharing professional knowledge and guidance.J. Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.K. Provides competent patient care to the above indicated patient populations by obtaining and appropriately interpreting data, making appropriate decisions based on demonstrated knowledge of age-specific growth and development, and appropriately adapting procedures and treatments.L. Rarely perform other cardiovascular testing including but not limited to Electrocardiographic Monitoring, Pulse Oximetry, ECG testing using various types of equipment, Holter and Event monitoring. Recognizes cardiac arrhythmias and responds appropriately.M. Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development and participates in medical center and/or departmental education programs.N. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONSA. Participates in Process Excellence activities.B. Administers intravenous contrast after competency assessment and provides appropriate monitoring.C. Performs IV-line insertion if qualified.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONSA. Education [formal]:1. Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited cardiovascular sonography program.2. Registered Diagnostic Cardiovascular Sonographer with active registration thru American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).i. In the event of colleague being a new graduate, colleague must be registered within 12 months of graduation per Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) guidelines.ii. Credentialing through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) is acceptable if applicant can demonstrate thorough knowledge and competence of cardiac pathology.B. Experience:1. At least two years of full-time employment in adult cardiovascular sonography preferred. No previous work experience required if student is a graduate of an accredited cardiac sonography program.C. Special Skills and Competencies:1. Must be able to work comfortably with patients of all ages2. A strong sense of responsibility and the ability to make sound judgments independently3. X Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Provider-American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer-American Red Cross) prior to employment or within 30 days of hire and maintains current status.X Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelinesCompletes Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.Completes Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.Completes Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) - American Heart Association within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.Completes MANDT Training within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.Completes Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire and maintains current status.
