Job Details:The pharmacist oversees the daily operations within the department to ensure the safe and appropriate processing and delivery of medications to the patients. The pharmacist is responsible for reviewing and verifying medication orders and completing the final check for medication dispensing. The pharmacist monitors patient drug therapies, provides drug information, and promotes medication safety. The pharmacist supports and supervises the pharmacy technicians. In the absence of the pharmacy manager, the pharmacist may be required to assume the essential responsibilities and perform the duties of the pharmacy manager.This role complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration, along with other regulatory agencies.Department Specific Job Details:

Medication Order ReviewAccurately reviews prescriptions and medication orders, checking medication for correct drug, route, dose, patient, and frequency.Calculates dosage based on mg/kg and verifies patient allergy information prior to dispensing medications.Intervenes with physicians when medication order is not appropriate for the patient. Documents intervention in computer system or on hardcopy of prescriptionDispenses medication safely and accurately for the patient. Appropriately labels all medications prior to dispensing.Prioritizes orders received in pharmacy based on clinical status of the patient.Prepares medications in a timely manner and adheres to department turnaround times for routine and STAT orders/prescriptions.2.
Checks Medications Prior to Dispensing
Accurately checks medications prepared by the technician for correct drug and dosage prepared.Checks compounded medications for accuracy and pharmaceutical appropriatenessMonitors the activities of the technician to ensure that products are prepared safely and accurately.Ensures the work area for preparing medications is clean, disinfected, and free of unrelated supplies and equipment.Checks medications prior to being refilled in the Pyxis Med stations.Checks medications sent via courier for accuracy prior to initiation of delivery.3.
Drug Information
Knowledgeable of the drug information resources available, including LexiComp and Micromedex.Provides accurate drug information to health care providers when called upon.Makes clinical decisions based on drug information provided.Accesses laboratory values for specific patients to aid in dosage decisions.Answers phone promptly and fields questions when appropriate.Utilizes the Medication Resource Center for additional information.4. Outpatient Pharmacy
Utilizes computer system to check patient profile for drug utilization.Demonstrates the ability to enter a prescription into computer system, check voice mail line, and update physician information.Compounds medications using established recipes and proper 795 guidelines.Demonstrates broad knowledge of USP 795 and FDA requirements of compounding and repackaging.Operates the signature pad, cash register, payroll deduction and credit card machines in order to promptly serve the customer.Has a strong understanding of DAW codes, days' supply, origin codes, and ICD-10 codes.Can properly re-bill previously checked out claimsIdentifies opportunities through OutcomesUnderstands outpatient computer system functions including: refill too soon, IVR, on order, owe procedure, auto-refill function, prior authorization processing, and texting.Contributes to audit prevention through training and prescription audits.Familiar with the Vaccines for Children requirements and workflowKnowledge of how USP 800 affects nonsterile compounding and repackaging of hazardous medications.5. Non-Sterile Compounding
Demonstrates broad knowledge of USP 795Can pass competencies demonstrating non-sterile techniquePrepares and performs the final review of non-sterile products utilizing proper techniquesSupervise non-sterile compounding personnel and ensure standard operating procedures and quality assurance procedures are followed.6.

Collaborates with patient, caregivers, and other healthcare professionals.Keeps up to date with current BLS modulesAttends educational programs and reads material relevant to pharmacy and health care to keep abreast of current information.Maintains continuing pharmaceutical education requirements as mandated by the State Board of Pharmacy.7.
