JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Performance of Routine Histological ProceduresPerforms all routine histological procedures including frozen sectioning, micronintervals, thick sectioning, embedding, microtomy, special stains, andconsultation/processing internal and external histological requests submitted to theResearch Histology Core Lab in a proficient manner and competent manner inaccordance to the certifying qualifications established by the Board of Registry -American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).Higher Level Performance CompetenciesPerforms all Specialized Procedures utilized in the Histology Core Laboratory toinclude, but not limited to the following:- 3-Dimensional Image Sectioning- Chromogenic In-situ Hybridization (CISH)- Codex Tissue Sectioning- Digital Pathology Imaging- DNAse/RNAse Tissue Preparations and Sectioning- Fluorescent Immunohistochemistry- Immunohistochemistry (IHC)- Laser Section Microtomy (LCM)- Map Sectioning- Micro RNA In-situ Hybridization (miRNA ISH)- Tissue Microarray Construction (TMA - Manual and Automated)- Tissue Transfer PreparationNovel Project Development Competencies1. Reviews protocols and research literature in preparation for novel protocoldevelopment2. Synthesizes information to critically think, apply ideas and skills in protocoldevelopment3. Collaborates with researchers and clinicians to assist in the development researchprotocols in preparation for clinical trials4. Analyzes material to ensure quality control and reproducibilityiLabs System Operation and Management1. Operates efficiently in the iLabs chargeback system2. Assists requesters in proper submission of orders in the iLabs system.2. Trains histology students assist with clinical trial requests, in developing and enforcinglaboratory policies, and other specialized processes as required by projects and protocols.Communication and Leadership

1. Display excellent communication skills and friendly demeanor2. Assists with oversight of lab operations3. Ensures quality controls are implemented with all projects2. Works independently while following standard operating procedures and policies anduses good judgment, particularly those requiring supervisory skills.3. Consults, modifies and/or develops new techniques required by various investigatorsinvolved in research activities, and adheres to and enforces laboratory policies andmethodology.Other duties as assigned

High school diploma or equivalent. With required education, five years of Histology Technician experience. With Associate's degree, three years experience in histopathology within the last ten years under the supervision of a pathologist (certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology, or eligible) or an appropriately certified medical scientist. With successful completion of a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) accredited Histotechnician program, one year of required experience. Histology Technician (HT) certification with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).
