JOB REQUIREMENTS: Job Summary: Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) veterinarians provide daily clinical care to our large population of Old World (rhesus and cynomolgus macaques) and New World (common marmosets) monkeys, as well as provide research support to scientists performing biomedical and behavioral research. WNPRC veterinarians have the opportunity to utilize cutting edge clinical and surgical techniques and equipment to provide exemplary care to captive nonhuman primates. The WNPRC houses nonhuman primates across three locations: the central location in the heart of the UW campus in downtown Madison, the WIMR facility located near the UW Hospital, and the Blue Mounds Quarantine (BMQ) facility located 30 minutes southwest of Madison. Responsibilities: Provides professional veterinary care to animals in research colonies, designs and implements programs, and provides expert guidance to research staff and animal care/use committees to support the wellbeing of research animals. Trains research staff on animal care principals, and may instruct or lecture students to promote safe and effective animal care principals. 10% Designs and implements animal care programs of preventive medicine for designated individual animals and colonies 20% Conducts physical exams, diagnoses medical conditions, treats injuries and diseases, and provides surgical and post-operative care for animals in various environments 10% Documents medical procedures and activity, disseminates information, and makes medical recommendations based on results 20% Serves as a subject matter expert, consultant, and unit liaison to internal and external stakeholders and leadership regarding research protocols 10% Assists in the development and review of protocols, operating policies and procedures, and grant applications as needed 10% Develops and facilitates trainings, educational courses, and affiliated materials to staff and students on animal care methodologies and processes 20% Supervises, mentors, and works side-by-side with veterinary technicians dedicated to the support of sophisticated anesthetic and/or surgical procedures Institutional Statement on Diversity: Diversity is a source...
