GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The mission of the office of Career Development and Professionalism (CDP) is to assist students and graduates to secure challenging and rewarding employment throughout their careers. This is accomplished by providing one-on-one and group job development coaching, counseling, programming, and resources to assist them in developing necessary job search strategies and skills. Additionally, the office of CDP provides students with the marketplace knowledge and interviewing opportunities to succeed in their job search.

This position requires extensive (daily) communications (written, verbal & electronic) with multiple constituencies both internal & external (i.e. students, alumni, legal employers, other university staff). Will meet daily with students in coaching/counseling relationship; will cultivate relationships with employers via email, phone, and personal meetings; will assist Assistant Dean of CDP with development and implementation of career development programming relevant to students interested in both private and public sector legal careers; will assist with on-campus interview program.

COMMUNICATIONS

Entails extensive, daily customer service responsibilities with both internal and external

constituencies. Will meet daily with students in coaching/counseling relationships; will cultivate relationships with employers via email, phone and personal meetings; will develop relationships with alumni via various programming/mentoring initiatives.

Special Schedule Requirements

Normal office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend work required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Juris Doctor required. Experience in the practice of law, legal hiring experience and/or career counseling experience in a legal or other higher education setting strongly preferred. Knowledge of attorney career options or legal marketplace strongly preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

Extremely strong communication and interpersonal skills required. Must be able to work independently. Must have detail orientation skills. Must have experience with Windows, Word, Excel, Access, web-site programs, Dreamweaver, Acrobat or other similar computer applications.

SUPERVISION & BUDGET AUTHORITY

Position does not supervise others and does not have budgetary authority.

Physical Environment and Requirements

Works in suite with five other staff. Has personal office. 80% of job is stationary 20% standing while presenting programs

Certifications and Licenses

Counseling - Provides career counseling to J.D. students (Day and Evening), LL.M. students (including foreign-trained attorneys) and alumnae/i of all experience levels regarding career planning, resume/cover letter preparation, job search strategies, practice specialties and other career development issues by means of individual appointments and group workshops.

Key Responsibility

Programming - Assists CDP Assistant Dean and staff with development and implementation of career development programming relevant to students interested in both private and public sector legal careers. Coordinates programming and tracking on recent graduates still seeking employment. Engages speakers for select programs. Publicizes programs, coordinates logistics and handles appropriate follow-up. Assists in the collection of data and generation of statistical reports relating to programming, including recent graduate employment data. Monitors and tracks judicial clerkships for interested students.

Student Outreach/Communication - Publicizes career and professional development focused programming, opportunities and resources to students through the online student announcements, email and Career Services social media accounts. Communicates as appropriate with specific classes and student organizations regarding the same.

Recruitment Programs/Job Fairs - Assists with all aspects of On-Campus Interview program. Assists in coordinating mock interview program for On-Campus Interview program and other job fairs. Assists in the collection of data and generation of statistical reports relating to student hiring through On-Campus Interview program and off-campus job fairs.

Key Responsibility

Employer Outreach - Assists Assistant Dean and Director of Career Services & Recruiting with employer outreach efforts by contacting potential legal employers as well as maintaining knowledge and familiarity with local, regional, and national legal markets and hiring practices to identify additional employers for outreach in Chicago and other designated areas. Engage in outreach with legal employers in both the public and private sectors. Knowledge and experience of federal and state judicial clerkship hiring processes desired but not required.
