Description

General Function:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and consistent with the Christian mission, the lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all members and participants in the pool area. In addition, the incumbent will also be responsible for member service while in the pool area. The lifeguard will be required to attend swim lesson instructor trainings and be prepared to teach swim lessons.

Principal Activities:
  • Must be able to work two (2) days per week. Weekend work will be required as needed
  • Check safety equipment and have ready for use
  • Be alert, courteous, professional, and tactful to all members, visitors and staff
  • Guard with staff shirt, rescue tube, whistle, and CPR pack
  • Maintain observation of pool at all times
  • Enforce all rules as written and posted
  • Avoid unnecessary talking or visiting with swimmers or visitors
  • To correct a rule infraction use (Q 1 2) in a courteous but determined manner
  • Clear swimmers from water during electrical storm. Wait 30 minutes after lightning and thunder before entering water
  • Clear pool immediately if there is a power outage
  • Make a survey of the bottom of the pool when coming on duty, during duty and when leaving
  • When closing check all rooms, lock dressing room doors, fill-out attendance sheets/ duty list, take articles to pool lost and found, and hang key in the Aquatic Director's box
  • Know proper emergency procedure
  • Give deep-water test to those wanting to swim in deep water
  • NEVER leave the pool unguarded
  • Record attendance for adult, youth, family open swim, and other groups as needed
  • Test pool chemistry and make adjustments as needed, record all results and actions in the pool log book
  • Communicate to all members and visitors in an appropriate manner
  • Attend YMCA Orientation sessions, training, and staff meetings as scheduled
  • Attend YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor training and be prepared to teach lessons
  • Review lifesaving skills, CPR, First Aid procedures and be knowledgeable of the Aquatics Handbook
  • Report to work at least 10 minutes before scheduled time
  • Clock In/Out as scheduled on the Aquatic work schedule
  • Perform other assignments as given by the Aquatic's Director or a member of the YMCA management team
Qualifications

Know-How:
  • Current YMCA or RED CROSS Lifeguard certification
  • CPR PR, AED & First Aid, PDT and Oxygen Administration Certifications
  • Hear and see noise and distress signals
  • Sit or stand for extended periods of time on a lifeguard stand
  • Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise, and remember
  • No experience necessary
Physical Requirements:
  • Seventeen (17) years of age
  • Sight, hearing, and speaking
  • Standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, squatting, climbing, sitting
  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of 50 lbs
  • Pulling a minimum of 100 lbs
  • Tolerance to moderate noise levels
  • Dressed professional in appropriate attire for activity that promotes a high standard of morality as specified by the Aquatics Director. Ladies - one piece bathing suit. Gentlemen - no speedos
Effect on End Results:

The effectiveness of the incumbent can be measured by:
  • The vigilance in monitoring and ensuring the safety of the members and participants
  • Attendance and preparedness
  • Performance evaluations completed by the members
  • Effectiveness will also be measured by the extent of which the incumbent is a supportive staff member achieving the overall goals of the Sumter Family YMCA
