City Police Department is accepting applications for Substitute and/or Assigned Crossing Guards for the Herriman City Community (This job is seasonal from August - May only, shifts are both before & after school). We are looking for hard-working, detail-oriented individuals to join our team to provide great service to our community and children. Substitutes will be given priority when additional assigned location positions come available. Herriman City provides a fantastic work environment and we are a great place to work. GENERAL PURPOSEPrepares crossing zones, and assists children in crossing streets safely on a seasonal basis while children attend school.SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direction of the Crossing Guard Coordinator but ultimately is responsible to the assigned Police Sergeant or Commander.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDirects or escorts pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian trafficCommunicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults.Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags wands, and hand signals as needed.Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians can cross streets.Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points. Turns on and off school crossing signs and flashing speed limit lights.Wears and uses safety equipment (vest, cones, stop signs) taking additional caution when in the road.Communicates to school children the importance of following traffic rules as needed.Participates in city or special events as asked by school administrators, P.T.A., and/or the sergeant or crossing guard coordinator.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent.Additional Knowledge:

Knowledge of current Utah traffic laws and emergency procedures in case of an accident.Correct use of the English language.Ability to use a smartphone app for scheduling and timekeeping.Physical:

Must be at least 18 years of age.Must be able to continually walk for up to 1 hour with minimal breaks.Must have sufficient sight and hearing for traffic control and monitor potential dangers.Must be able to hold stop signs visible to cars while walking.

Work Environment:

Employee performs work in the road and alongside moving vehicles. Mental exertion dealing with children and communicating with them on their level. Works in all weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, snow, and rain. Involves walking and standing for long periods of time.

NOTE:

In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster, that threatens the life, health, and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours, and performing work significantly different from the employee's normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.
