JOB SUMMARY: Controls vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow at school crossings for safety purposes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary;Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults;Discourage children from behaving unsafely near traffic, such as darting into the street without looking or crossing against a traffic signal;Uses existing gaps in traffic to help students cross safely. When the natural traffic flow does not allow enough time for children to safely cross a street, a guard may need to create gaps by stopping traffic temporarily;Stops traffic with hand signals then verbally directs children to cross the street. A guard is always the first person in the street and the last person out of the street.Alert motorists that pedestrians are in the process of using the school crossing;Observe and report any incidents or conditions that present a potential safety hazard to the school children or the guard to their immediate supervisor;Cautions drivers of speeding vehicles by use of whistle and/or hand signals;Records license numbers of vehicles disregarding the school zone speed limit;Places and removes caution signs and conesPerforms other related work as required

Knowledge:

Knowledge of traffic laws; emergency procedures;

Ability:

Employees must be able to think and react independently to various situations;

Ability to use accurate judgement of traffic flow, speed and direction of travel;

Ability to prioritize activities;

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, using proper grammar and

spelling;

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions;

Ability to work effectively with children, parents, and school employees;

Ability to interact members of the public in a positive manner

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work requires some physical exertion such as walking, climbing, bending, stooping, stretching, or similar activities. The work requires standing for long periods of time. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Must have High School diploma or its GED equivalent. Must be of good moral character and reputation, background check required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires early morning and afternoon. Specific hours are determined when assigned to school
