Summary Objective

SUMMARY OBJECTIVEThe purpose of this position is to promote a comprehensive year-round aquatics program to include swim team, junior lifeguard, "Learn to Swim" program, summer camp, special events, and open swimming.This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Teaches group and private lessons in the "Learn to Swim" program and other aquatic related classes.Aids in coaching, if necessary year-round recreational swim team, water polo, water aerobics, and other related aquatic programs.Provides lifeguard services to patrons in the pool and administers CPR/First Aid.Aids in event set up/breakdown at Aquatic Center.Implements and maintains facility and personnel records.Assists with facility finances to include daily admission, class fees, payroll, and memberships.Adheres to all Aquatic facility protocols.Promotes and markets aquatic programs and facilities.Attends in-service training on a routine basis.Assists in maintaining various operational reports on attendance, inventory, first aid training, simulation activities and other relevant duties.Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing programs and specialized aquatic activities, including arts and crafts, special needs programs, festivals, concerts, fairs, athletic leagues, tournaments, fitness programs, after school programs, summer day camps, etc.Interacts and communicates with a variety of groups and individuals including department and City staff, community groups, volunteers, senior citizens, special needs population and the general publicAssist in ensuring the safety of all program, activity and event participants and providers by following City policies and procedures and monitoring participants' activityMonitors aquatic facilities to ensure security, proper working order of equipment, cleanliness of area and other potential maintenance hazards.Greets visitors to the office and aquatic facilities.Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment.Assists in planning and monitoring programs for all ages.Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.Six (6) months of experience as a lifeguard, water safety instructor or relevant water skills, safety training and swim experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification.Passing of skills test which consists of swimming 300 yards, 2:00 treading water, and 1:40 brick recovery test. Swim test will be scheduled at a later date.PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Water Safety Instructor Certification preferred (or must obtain within 6 months of hire).

Knowledge of the principles and practices of public recreation administration.Knowledge in aquatic management and pool mechanical operations systems.Knowledge of the rules of play for a variety of sports and games, and the appropriate equipment used and facilities needed.Knowledge of office practices and procedures.Knowledge of computer software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.Skill in preparing reports and producing promotional materials.Skill in developing, organizing, and promoting recreational activities.Skill in public relations.Skill in prioritizing work assignments.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.Ability to communicate effectively with City staff and the public.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, handle stressful situations, and adhere to prescribed routines.Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of assigned staff.Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.Ability to work evenings and weekends.Ability to work with all age groups including seniors, adults, and youth, with and without special needs

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.WORK ENVIRONMENT:Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to:

Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.Traffic; Moving machinery.Electrical shock; Heights.Radiation; Disease/pathogens.Toxic/caustic chemicals; Explosives; Violence.Other extreme hazards not listed above

WORK HOURS:Hours/shifts vary Monday-Friday between 5:30am - 8:30pm and Saturday-Sunday between 8:30am - 4:30pm (May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays to meet the business needs of the City).

ESSENTIAL SAFETY FUNCTIONSIt is the responsibility of each employee to comply with established policies, procedures and safe work practices. Each employee must follow safety training and instructions provided by their supervisor. Each employee must also properly wear and maintain all personal protective equipment required for their job. Finally, each employee must immediately report any unsafe work practices or unsafe conditions as well as any on-the-job injury or illnesses.
