Join the Office Of Community Engagement as our next Communications Sr. Manager, where you’ll provide strategic communications support and leadership to the mayor’s office policy staff, city leaders, and city council. This position works closely with our citywide communications team to:

Oversee citywide media relations and messaging, developing and executing strategies to communicate city initiatives, programs, and services to the community we serve.

Support the mayor’s policy advisors in all communications efforts to elevate the work the city is doing on housing, economic development, transportation, climate action, and more.

Work closely with a dynamic team of communicators, strategists, designers, social media mavens and outreach specialists to engage anyone who lives, works or plays in Boise with the work of the city.

Essential Functions

Supervises the work of professional, management, technical, and/or other employees of a clearly delineated division or exercises independent authority over a critical function with citywide impact directly or through subordinate supervisors to ensure adequate resources are available for staff to perform their duties; ensures that assigned operations and activities comply with organization goals and objectives; and directs actions and results of major processes and programs and maintains controlling budget authority.

Oversees citywide media relations and messaging, developing and executing strategies to communicate city initiatives, programs, services, and more. Serves as one of the city’s main media contacts ensuring all city communications are responded to in a timely and transparent manner.

Supports the mayor’s policy advisors in all communications efforts and provides guidance and support on media strategy and tactics. Coordinates with the city’s public information and communications staff members regarding media inquiries, public records requests, communications, planning meaningful press events, and in representing the mayor’s strategic priorities to city staff and residents. Works within the community engagement team that currently includes staff responsible for media relations, public outreach, social media, constituent services, and graphic design.

Writes speeches, news releases, web content, newsletter articles, op-eds, and columns, and serves as the editor for office communications when applicable. Serves as a collaborative thought partner providing communications and messaging guidance to staff to create meaningful feedback opportunities with residents to improve city projects and initiatives.

Creates, manages, oversees, and executes communication plans, materials, and programs that reach target audiences and project goals. Provides excellent project management and client service to city departments, as appropriate. Leads and manages communication projects from planning to execution by providing timely and proactive deliverables and updates.

Works closely with graphic designers, vendors, and agencies in producing various pieces in digital format for web and social media purposes. Creates print, video, and experiential media for events, public meetings, and hearings. Copywrites and copyedits communications that inform and engage target audiences.

Requirements

Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field providing education in writing and public policy, and

7 years of professional experience in public/media relations in a political office, government entity, major corporation, or nonprofit agency.

Knowledge of:

principles, practices, methods, and techniques of public/community relations, media relations, social media, and program management

digital, print, and broadcast journalism standards

computer usage, including related software

principles of effective management and supervision.

Ability to:

organize, manage, collaborate, and execute multiple projects

develop and execute strategic communication goals

work with conflicting priorities under tight deadlines

maintain composure, professionalism, and confidentiality at all times

anticipate stakeholders' needs and deliver services effectively and efficiently in a timely, accurate, respectful, and friendly manner

write clear, concise, effective, professional, and grammatically and factually accurate content

communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance

perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor, and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation.

Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training

Bilingual language fluency in Spanish.

Master’s degree in communication, public relations, business, or related field and

5 years of progressive experience in communications or public or media relations, specifically in a government or municipal environment

Knowledge of city government operations and applicable laws.

Licensing And Other Requirements

Valid state-issued driver's license.
