JOB TITLE: STUDENT SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST EXTERN

JOB SUMMARY:

The Student Surgical Technologist Extern is a student of a Surgical Technologist program that will observe the handling of instruments, supplies, and equipment as necessary during the surgical procedure under the direct supervision of department leadership. The Student Surgical Technologist Extern participants will develop an understanding of the procedure being performed and the needs of the surgeon. The Student Surgical Technologist Extern must commit to no more than 18 hours per week over a period of 16-weeks equivalent to a school semester.TYPICAL DUTIES:

Under direct supervision of a Certified Surgical Technologist or Clinical Nurse I-Operating Room, students will be involved in observing and participating in duties, including, but not limited to:Assists with performing the surgical scrub while donning gown, gloves, and any other necessary personal protective equipment (PPE)Assists with holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeonPrepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devicesPrepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriateUses facility approved tray and instrument tracking system per hospital policyProvides support to team members with gowning and glovingParticipates in the setup of the sterile back table and mayo standGathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment, when and as neededObserves the surgical site and patient verification, and confirmation of instrument sterility by showing chemical indicators to attending physician/surgeon during the time out procedureAssists in passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedureParticipates in measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedureAssists other members of the team with room turnover and cleaningParticipates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient carePerforms other duties as assignedMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent (MUST PROVIDE PROOF AT TIME OF INTERVIEW)Currently enrolled in an Operating Room Technician/Surgical Technician, or Military Program approved by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTA) OR National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (Proof of enrollment will be required at time of interview)Must be able to commit to no more than 18-hours per week over a period of 16-weeks equivalent to a school semesterKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

Working knowledge of strong interpersonal skillsWorking knowledge of the standard concepts, practices and procedures of an operating roomKnowledge of the standard methods of cleaning and maintaining operating room instruments, equipment, and suppliesKnowledge of the standard preparation of patients for surgery and post-surgery proceduresKnowledge of healthcare needs in pediatric, adult, and geriatric patientsUnderstand the procedures used in performing the duties and responsibilities of a Scrub AttendantExcellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groupsDemonstrates the hospital's quality philosophy by fulfilling all commitments accurately the first timeAware of patient and family rights, ethical, legal, cultural, and spiritual concernsAbility to bend, lift, push heavy objectsAbility to stand, stoop, bend, and reach for extended periodsAbility to distinguish basic colors, and shades of colorsAbility to hear normally with or without assistive deviceAbility to recognize age specific instruments and equipment needs for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patientsAdheres to infection control standardsAbility to follow CCH policies, procedures, and personnel rulesPHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements.
