Historical Interpreter - American Indian Area Rock Ledge - (Seasonal Position)
About the Job: Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services seeks a Historical Interpreter to work in the 1775 through 1835 American Indian Interpretive area at Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site.
Job Type: Seasonal
Work Schedule: Typical schedule will be Wednesday - Saturday from 9:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and Sunday from 12:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.
Work Location: 3105 Gateway Rd, Colorado Springs, CO 80904
This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
Approximate dates of employment will be end of April through mid August. Scheduled hours will vary based on department needs. Opportunities to work additional hours at special events from September through November may be available. Total hours worked will not exceed 1,500 annually.
As a Historical Interpreter, you will:
- Direct hands-on historical and educational activities that assist visitors in understanding American Indian life and culture, including but not limited to, traditional food preparation and preservation and set up and taking down Ute-style hide tipi.
- Enthusiastically initiate conversations with visitors of varied ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds.
- Tell the story of American Indians within the Pikes Peak region in a compelling and thought-provoking manner.
- Supervise adult and junior volunteers.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in the historic area.
- Obtain an in-depth and varied historical knowledge of American Indian culture through continuous training and research.
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Ability to diplomatically facilitate discussions of sensitive topics.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
- Ability to remain organized and on time.
- Education and/or experience in history, agriculture, education, or other related field.
- Horsemanship skills.
- Public speaking experience with large and small groups.
- Experience working with children.
- Experience as an interpreter and/or educator at a historic site or nature center.
- Knowledge of American Indian history, heritage, and culture - especially related to Colorado and the western United States.
- Knowledge of the history of the Pikes Peak area and the United States.
- Experience with traditional American Indian arts and crafts.
- Skilled in traditional cooking and crafts.
Regular attendance is a requirement for this position.
Physical Demands: The ability to regularly lift 55 pounds and stand, sit, stoop, climb, bend, and walk for extended periods is required.
Environmental Conditions: Mostly indoors, outside weather permitting.
