For over 50 years, Bowery Residents' Committee (BRC) has been one of New York City's leading nonprofit organizations committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness. We provide caring and effective services and housing to more than 10,000 individuals each year. Employing a holistic approach, we operate more than 30 programs ranging from outreach to the unsheltered, transitional housing and shelter, permanent housing, substance abuse treatment, mental and physical health services, and workforce development and senior services.

About The Role
What You'll Do
We are seeking an experienced and mission-driven operational leader for the role of Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). As a key member of BRC's executive management team (EMT), the CAO will ensure BRC offers best-in-class facilities, effective information technology, and efficient operations, all in service of meeting the unmet needs of people experiencing homelessness. They will collaborate on the development and implementation of strategic goals, maintaining regular communication with the EMT and Board of Directors.
The CAO will also spearhead key organizational initiatives, building systems that enable the staff at BRC to support clients and transform lives. In addition to facilities, technology, and asset management, they will oversee an administrative portfolio that includes fleet management, procurement, and food services.
Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To
Organizational Leadership
Serve as a member of and leader on the Executive Management Team, ensuring that the physical operations of BRC are operating effectively, in turn enabling staff to provide a caring and effective pathway from homelessness to home for our clients. Manage a team of five direct reports and lead a total administrative team of 150, elevating the impact of the team by implementing systems and structures that support strong infrastructure and foster collaboration. Develop and administer the annual budget for the department, working closely with the finance team to identify mission-critical investments, potential cost savings, and opportunities for operational improvements. Work closely with the program team to support aspects of the BRC workforce development program related to facilities management Co-Chair our Board's Facilities Committee, ensuring the effective stewardship of physical assets.
Strategic Planning and Implementation
Develop and implement a comprehensive facilities management strategy to ensure optimal functionality and compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. Lead the agency's technology vision and strategy to adopt systems that increase efficiency and remove silos (with a particular focus on IT).
Facilities and Asset Management
Oversee the real estate portfolio, comprising approximately 30 properties which include affordable housing units and buildings, commercial space, office space and City-owned properties. Ensure all facilities practices and policies provide housing and services in a dignified and supportive environment while ensuring compliance with building codes, health and safety standards, and other regulatory requirements. Develop and implement effective asset strategies for acquisitions, dispositions, and developing property management standards. Ensure proper plans for future growth, oversight, protocols, performance benchmarks, and facilitate opportunities for ideal property performance. Oversee the day-to-day operations for all BRC facilities, both leased and owned, operating round-the-clock including preventative maintenance, repairs, renovations, and upgrades of over two dozen facilities.
Technology
Oversee all aspects of the organization's technology operations ensuring that technology infrastructure, systems, and initiatives align with and support the mission and strategic priorities. Manage BRC's external IT consultants and ensure that they deliver quality services; assess potential IT investments and expenditures on an ongoing basis, making recommendations to improve cost-effectiveness and staff satisfaction. Steward the development, management, maintenance, and security of BRC's technology infrastructure, including networks, software, servers, databases, and end-user devices.
Additional Operational Leadership Responsibilities
Preside over an effective enterprise-wide fleet management program, ensuring safe operations of a fleet of dozens of vehicles. Using fleet and driver data, analyze and monitor fleet risk and provide solutions to ensure optimization and safety. Supervise an effective food service program, which facilitates the healthy preparation and delivery of meals to thousands of residents daily, consistent with regulatory obligations. Supervise the organization's procurement function, ensuring high quality goods and services are sourced from a diverse and competitive supplier base. Ensure procurement practices align with BRC's goal to source from minority and women-owned businesses, as well as with regulatory obligations.
Who You'll Work With
You will report to BRC's President/CEO. You will supervise a team of five, including the Vice President of Asset Management, Vice President of Facility Support Services, Vice President of Information Technology, Director of Food Services, and Director of Purchasing. You will frequently collaborate with seven peers on BRC's Executive Management Team, and Co-Chair the Board of Directors' Facilities Committee.
Required Skills And Experience
A deep belief and passion for BRC's work, and an understanding of the crucial role that physical operations play in fulfilling our mission. 15+ years of operational oversight facilities and asset management at a multi-site organization, ideally including experience at a facility with 24/7 operations; proven success leading an IT function is a strong plus. 7+ years of people management experience, with a demonstrated ability to coach, manage and mentor team members across multiple functions. Effective communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work effectively with diverse constituents and levels of an organization. A pragmatic mindset with a willingness to navigate a resource-constrained, 24/7 environment, recognizing incremental improvements as meaningful successes. A vision of the forest and the trees, simultaneously zooms into detailed work plans while considering enterprise-level priorities. Exceptional judgement, problem-solving, and decision-making acumen. Goal-oriented mindset with a focus on setting a vision for and measuring success.
Additional Details
Location and Work Environment
The CAO will split their time across BRC's headquarters (131 West 25th Street) and 30 program sites, spending time at specific locations as needed. There is an expectation to be on site at least three days per week. The CAO will have access to a company car.
Compensation
The salary range for this position begins at $225,000 and is commensurate with experience.
