Role Summary/Purpose: The
VP, Staff Cryptography Engineer
will serve as a key role in safeguarding enterprise multi-cloud systems, networks, and data. The position is responsible for designing, developing, driving, implementing, leading, and managing multi-cloud Information Security Engineering activities for the Cryptography program, including the underlying capabilities/technologies. In addition, this role will act as a trusted peer and stakeholder advisor within the organization, working closely with Information Security Engineering leadership to ensure delivery of the overall program roadmap aligned with the Cryptography strategy and vision.

Role Summary/Purpose:
The
VP, Staff Cryptography Engineer
is a key player in safeguarding enterprise multi-cloud systems, networks, and data. Responsible for designing, developing, driving, implementing, leading, and managing multi-cloud Information Security Engineering activities for the Cryptography program, including the underlying capabilities/technologies. Acts as a trusted peer and stakeholder advisor, working closely with leadership to ensure the delivery of the cryptography strategy and roadmap.
The VP, Staff Cryptography Engineer is part of the Synchrony Information Security Cryptography Team, serving as a subject matter expert in Cloud Security, Cryptography, Information Security, Key/Secrets Management, Privacy, PKI, and Tokenization. The role focuses on delivering enterprise data protection controls, automation capabilities, and supporting processes to enable Synchrony’s security strategy at scale. The candidate should have strong experience in Cloud Security, Cryptography, DevSecOps, and related areas, with skills in automation, controls, governance, lifecycle management, and security standards.

Essential Responsibilities
Promote engineering excellence through automation, collaboration, and orchestration.
Collaborate with architecture teams to identify gaps, develop requirements, and test solutions.
Lead ongoing DevSecOps/Engineering support for a global cryptography program leveraging multi-cloud data protection capabilities.
Manage technology from inception, identify gaps, and ensure coverage and capability improvements.
Maintain BAU operations, change management, disaster recovery, and incident processes.
Participate as a technical lead within the Information Security engineering team.
Contribute to documentation of procedures and standards for security infrastructure.
Work with peers to prioritize work using Agile processes, managing risks and impediments.
Design and implement multi-cloud security measures to protect applications, systems, and networks.
Support day-to-day administration of multi-cloud infrastructure, including API security, firewalls, encryption, PKI, secrets management, etc.
Mentor and serve as SME within the organization.
Act as a SAFe Product Owner for cryptographic technologies, managing the backlog and roadmap.
Support a “you build it, you own it” operational model.
Collaborate with program managers, scrum masters, and architects to communicate technical impacts.
Perform other duties or projects as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years in Application Development, Security, or Systems Engineering; or 7+ years of experience with a High School Diploma/GED.
3+ years in Cloud, Cryptography, and DevSecOps.
3+ years in leadership roles (cryptography engineering preferred).
4+ years in regulatory compliance and security frameworks (e.g., COBIT, ISO27001, NIST).
Hands-on expertise with API development/security, AWS, Azure, GCP, big data, CI/CD, containers, cryptography, databases, Git/Github, HashiCorp Vault, Java, Python, Terraform, etc.
Desired Characteristics
Ability to work under pressure across multiple projects.
Certifications in cloud, security, governance (AWS, Azure, GCP, GIAC, ISC2, etc.).
Experience designing and managing cloud security solutions.
Strong communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience with Agile and SAFe methodologies.
Operational understanding of infrastructure management.
Effective interpersonal and influencing skills.
Additional Information
Salary range: $135,000 - $230,000 USD annually, with potential bonuses. Compensation varies based on experience, skills, and market adjustments.
