This is a 7-8 month paid co-op opportunity within Cargills Protein and Salt (CPS) business unit, located either in Lansing, NY or Cleveland, OH. The co-op will provide hands-on experience in an underground salt mine environment, focusing on both technical and managerial aspects of mining engineering.
Responsibilities:
Co-ops will gain experience in either Operations Leadership and/or Maintenance & Reliability Engineering. Potential career paths after the co-op include:
- Mining Engineers: Work both underground and on the surface, focusing on mining techniques (surveying, mapping, room and pillar mining, mineral processing, water management, materials handling, and safety), supporting infrastructure, and bringing de-icing salt to customers.
- Electrical Engineers: Gain exposure to high-voltage power infrastructure and control systems. Responsibilities include maintaining electrical reliability for equipment (mining equipment, hoisting systems, pumps, conveyor belts, screening equipment).
- Production Management Engineers: Lead people, processes, and products in a mining environment. This involves direct supervision of operators, participation in daily production meetings, ensuring MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulatory compliance, process optimization, and managing employee relations.
- Process/Project Engineers: Handle business case development, vendor selection, budget management, and project management for major projects. Responsibilities include process optimization, safety improvements, infrastructure upgrades, and energy efficiency initiatives. This role involves working with innovation processes and reliability-centered design.
The work environment is described as team-oriented, fast-paced, and hands-on, emphasizing employee engagement, inclusion, and innovation. The co-op will involve physical activity including bending, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects over 50 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Exposure to heat, cold, and salt dust is also possible. The position requires the ability to work in an underground environment.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Hourly Rate: $25.00 $34.70 per hour (dependent on graduation date and full-time employment eligibility).

Qualifications:
Required:
- Ability to work in an underground environment.
- Currently pursuing a bachelors or masters degree in Mining Engineering (MinE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical Engineering (EE), Industrial Engineering (IE), or a related engineering discipline.
- Degree completion between December 2025 and May 2028.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. (not solely based on a student visa or third-party sponsored visa).
- Geographic flexibility and willingness to relocate to Cleveland, OH or Lansing, NY.
- Ability to complete a 7-8 month co-op (May/June December 2025).
- High degree of initiative and resourcefulness.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse individuals.
Preferred:
- Sophomore, junior, or senior status in an accredited engineering program.
- Mining or heavy industrial co-op/internship experience.
- 2.7 GPA or higher.
- Ability to apply technical knowledge to job duties.
- Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
- Leadership experience.
