Job Description Position Summary Brookfield Properties’ retail group has an immediate need for an Associate General Counsel for its Litigation, Compliance, and Employment group. We are seeking an eager, experienced, and exceptional business litigator to oversee a busy and diverse docket of litigation, disputed matters, and business counseling assignments. Under the direction of the Head of Litigation, Compliance, and Employment, this position serves internal stakeholders across a wide range of departments to identify legal risks, resolve conflicts, and support business objectives. Responsibilities Manage a diverse portfolio of pre-litigation and litigation disputes arising from the company’s business operations, including, but not limited to, landlord-tenant matters, real estate transactional disputes, land use and development issues, partnership and joint venture conflicts, contract disputes, IP infringement, ADA claims, construction litigation, bankruptcy, and privacy. Provide day-to-day legal advice, counsel, and recommendations to internal stakeholders on legal issues impacting business operations, with a strong focus on minimizing legal risk. Select, retain, and effectively manage outside counsel, including: Overseeing legal fee budgets, staffing assignments, and case management, Critically reviewing and editing legal documents such as briefs, affidavits, discovery responses, and material correspondence, and Developing and implementing settlement strategies and negotiating settlements. Develop and present strategic recommendations on case strategy in coordination with business partners, outside counsel, and legal management while carefully considering all practical business objectives. Keep appropriate parties apprised of case developments. Prepare, distribute, and track legal hold memoranda; develop and oversee e-discovery strategy and activity. Analyze potential legal risks and claims, gather and assess relevant facts, interview key individuals, review key documentation to support legal positions, drafting legal memoranda as well as coordinating with internal insurance coverage counsel as needed. Draft and respond to demand letters and articulate the company’s legal position clearly and persuasively in written and verbal presentations to internal partners at all levels of the organization, including senior management. Ensure organizational compliance with applicable laws and regulations. Develop, manage, and enforce corporate policies. Identify areas in need of training to develop and conduct internal training on legal topics of special interest to the business. Assist in preparing responses to internal and external audit requests. Collaborate on compliance processes and initiatives, including emerging privacy, cyber-security, and property-access issues. Develop background and serve as the Litigation, Compliance and Employment group’s subject matter expert regarding recurring issues or key areas of law. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. J.D. from a leading law school with proven academic success. Active member in good standing of the Illinois Bar. A minimum of six (6) years of relevant and substantive legal experience, with a preference for at least three (3) years of experience in a law firm setting. Must possess hands-on experience managing all aspects of general commercial and business litigation matters. Extremely strong verbal and written communication skills (writing sample required). Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Proven outstanding client management skills, with the capacity to build rapport, inspire confidence, and earn trust. Ability to remain calm and professional while managing stressful situations, a heavy and diverse case load, and providing excellent customer service. Possess a collaborative and low-ego approach, with a focus on well-informed insights and action. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and interface with people at all levels by virtue of professional competence, personal integrity and personal style. Demonstrated flexibility in working both independently and within a team. Enthusiasm for continuous learning and the ability to quickly master new tasks and skills in unfamiliar areas of the law. Strong organizational skills and proven ability to independently manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
