The Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys, is recruiting for a Geologist 4 – Senior Spectral Geologist in Anchorage. What You Will Be Doing: The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys is seeking a professional geologist with project management experience and expertise in hyperspectral-geoscience and technology to lead a new hyperspectral scanning program at the Division's Geologic Materials Center (GMC). The project manager will conduct scientific research; provide hands-on oversight of technological operations; lead data analysis, processing, and interpretation; publish spectral data and results; assist generation of internal and external funding; develop collaborative partnerships; and support State of Alaska goals to enhance understanding of geology and resource systems. This challenging but exciting position involves leading a high-level research project using the extensive GMC sample inventory and scanning technology to create detailed digital representations of drill cores. Mission and Values/Culture: The mission of the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys is “to determine the potential of Alaskan land for production of minerals, fuels, and geothermal resources, the locations and supplies of groundwater and construction material, and the potential geologic hazards to buildings, roads, bridges, and other installations” (AS 41.08.020). Our goal is to increase understanding of Alaska's geologic history and resources, stimulate interest in developing the state’s mineral and energy endowment, and connect the GMC’s geologic collections to research, industry, and education communities. The project manager will contribute to a portfolio of Alaska geologic information, highlighting resource development opportunities and helping grow Alaska's economy. Benefits of Joining Our Team: The Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys provides great on-the-job training, flexible work hours, and collaboration with passionate colleagues. Staff are encouraged to learn and grow through work experiences, knowledge-sharing, and structured training sessions. The hyperspectral program lead is part of a dedicated team supporting the resource industry, government researchers, and academia studying Alaska's geology. Work involves collaboration with scanning and core library teams and mineral and energy experts, with guidance from the State Geologist. Partnerships with mining and energy professionals, federal and state agencies, universities, and companies offering hyperspectral services are key to the success of this position. This program manager assignment is vital to successful implementation of the state’s new hyperspectral scanning program and the creation of high-resolution datasets describing Alaska's geologic resources. The Working Environment You Can Expect: Located at the Geologic Materials Center in Anchorage, Alaska, this full-time permanent position offers a balanced workday including project management, core scanning, data analysis, staff training, hardware support, and skills development. The successful candidate will: Investigate and facilitate the innovative application of hyperspectral data to understand mineralogical, chemical, spatial, and temporal features of geologic systems in Alaska; Set scanning priorities, author reports and data products, provide hyperspectral interpretation support to stakeholders, and assist generation of internal and external funding; Assure data integrity, scanner system maintenance, and communication with hardware and software designers to resolve higher-level problems; Develop peer networks and relationships with professionals in the resource sector, foster collaborations with commercial and scientific partners, and effectively disseminate findings to both scientific and non-scientific audiences in support of State of Alaska resource-development activities.
