Jackson Hole Classical Academy operates in the historic Christian tradition. All faculty, staff, and board members annually reaffirm their commitment to the Nicene Creed. During the initial screening process, applicants are asked to affirm their agreement with the Nicene Creed, before continuing in the application process.
Position Description:
The Director of Athletics reports to the Head of School and serves on the academic team under the supervision of the Associate Headmaster (the senior-most academic program officer). The Director of Athletics is responsible for leadership, strategic direction, and continuity of the academy’s athletics and physical education programs. This leader integrates athletics and physical activity into the educational experience of every student in a manner consistent with the school’s classical, Christian culture. The Director of Athletics embodies individual moral excellence and guides students to a deepening sense of belonging in the school’s mission, with a view to their growth in wisdom. And this individual engages with other local and regional schools, community organizations, and area partners.
Duties And Responsibilities
Athletic and Physical Education Programming
Builds out and oversees robust middle school and high school athletics programs, with a portfolio of sport offerings, to enhance student retention and attract new students. Constructs a vertical coaching model to provide continuity from middle school to varsity sports. Integrates the school’s physical education program into a culture of athletic excellence. Serves on the academy’s instructional coaching team to provide regular observation, mentorship, and evaluation of physical education teachers and athletic coaches. Provides professional development for coaches and physical education teachers to align standards of excellence across all areas of the school’s physical education and athletics offerings. Regularly reviews and refines athletics handbook, policies, and practices. Ensures curricular and cocurricular athletic offerings that provide all students with opportunities and resources to share in the school’s culture of athletic excellence, and occasions for all teams to be recognized. Teaches in the academy’s program of curricular, co-curricular, and/or extracurricular offerings.
Athletics Program Integration and Engagement
As a member of the academic team, the Director of Athletics continually seeks to integrate and improve the school’s academic and athletics handbook, policies, and practices; attends team meetings to ensure team cohesion and consistency in application of best practices. Works with the academic team to build a student culture and life master plan to enhance school spirit, deepen student ownership, and drive family and community engagement. Working with the Head of School, develops a clear philosophy and vision for how bodily excellence through athletics and physical education advances the school’s classical Christian mission. Safeguards a culture of ordered joy and standards of student conduct across all spaces of the school, and particularly in the physical education and athletics programs. Organizes school-wide events (e.g., Spirit Days, Athletic Field Day) to enhance student culture. Effective Organization, Coordination, and Communication Prepares and manages school’s athletic budget; maintains school credit card for athletic expenses. Schedules and coordinates athletics activities to minimize scheduling conflicts and maximize the effectiveness of the athletic programs; organizes all game-day activities. Ensures timely and accurate communication of information about school-sponsored sports and athletic activities to students, families, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. Maintains athletic records and updates Head of School on athletics activities. Works with the Marketing and Communications Manager to adhere to brand standards and promote events and programs via multichannel marketing strategies. Partners with local district and private schools to advertise athletic offerings at Jackson Hole Classical Academy to students in those communities. Coordinates the rental of Field House and Athletics facilities. Cultivating Wisdom and Virtue. Lives according to the school’s classical Christian mission in private and serves as ambassador for the school and its mission in public; models Christian charity and the good life. Honors other authorities in the lives of students, including parents, pastors, elders, other teachers, and school administrators; partners with parents in mentoring students. Assists Head of School in the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of coaches. Performs other duties and projects as assigned by Head of School and/or Associate Headmaster.
Prerequisite Skills and Expertise:
Loves students and classical ideals of bodily excellence expressed through physical training. Highest standards of integrity, sound judgment, confidentiality, and reliability. Strong interpersonal, relational, and communication skills. Familiarity with classical education curriculum and/or pedagogy. Proficiency with software applications, including MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Education And Professional Experience
Bachelor’s degree required. Extensive and diversified background in private or public education setting with experience building, growing, and maintaining excellent athletics programs. Experience coaching physical education teachers and coaches preferred, not required.

Salary is commensurate with experience. Full-time benefits, including healthcare, cost-of-living adjustment, and IRA matching, available.
