About the Role
The Controller serves as a senior financial leader responsible for overseeing accounting operations and financial reporting for a property management portfolio. This position ensures the integrity of financial data through effective oversight of an outsourced accounting team, develops and maintains robust internal controls, and provides strategic financial guidance to leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct all accounting functions performed by the outsourced accounting team, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and financial reporting
- Review and validate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of financial statements
- Enforce accounting policies, procedures, and quality control processes for the outsourced accounting team to follow
- Maintain comprehensive internal control systems to ensure compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and company policies
- Manage the relationship with the outsourced accounting provider, establishing clear performance metrics and communication protocols
- Thoroughly review financial statements, management reports, and KPIs before presentation to executive leadership and ownership groups
- Support the annual budgeting process and prepare regular forecasts and financial projections
- Oversee treasury management including cash flow planning, banking relationships, and debt compliance
- Coordinate tax planning, preparation, and filing activities in conjunction with external tax advisors
- Perform detailed reviews of accounting work to ensure data integrity and identify improvement opportunities
- Implement accounting technology solutions to improve efficiency and reporting capabilities between internal and outsourced teams
- Ensure compliance with lender requirements, partnership agreements, and management contracts
- Provide strategic financial analysis to support business decisions and growth initiatives
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA or Master's degree preferred
- 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 3 years in a management role
- Experience in real estate or property management accounting
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, and financial reporting requirements specific to real estate
- Proficiency with property management software (Yardi, MRI, RealPage, or similar)
- Experience managing outsourced accounting relationships or vendors
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and quality control skills
- Strong communication abilities with experience presenting to executive leadership
- Experience with system integrations and coordinating between internal and external teams
- Knowledge of partnership structures, waterfall calculations, and investor reporting

Location: This will be a remote role to begin with and move to a hybrid role in our Chicago office once we achieve density. You must be open to transitioning to a hybrid working environment.
