Organization Background
The Bank Policy Institute (BPI) is a nonpartisan public policy, research and advocacy group, representing the nation’s leading banks. Our members include universal banks, regional banks and the major foreign banks doing business in the United States.
BPI staff includes economists, financial analysts and attorneys, all focused on using data and economic analysis to shape sound public policy. We distribute our research and analysis to U.S. and global financial regulators, members of Congress, academics and media through academic-quality research papers, blog posts, white papers, comment letters, and Congressional testimony.
Position Summary
Economists conduct and present research and analysis related to banking and bank regulation, financial markets, non-bank financial institutions, household finance and monetary policy. The research varies from papers intended for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals to quick-response blog posts on breaking developments. Analysis is distributed as published research notes and blog posts, briefings for senior bank officials, discussions with Congressional and banking agency officials and media interviews. Economists also periodically organize conferences and symposiums on timely banking and financial market issues. Economists are expected to assist Regulatory Affairs colleagues in the management of member workgroups and preparation of comment letters and assist Public Affairs colleagues in the preparation of advocacy-focused communications.
Candidates should have a PhD in economics or finance, at least five years’ experience conducting related empirical research relevant to public policy and strong communication skills.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities

Duties Include
Research and analyze financial institutions, financial markets, household finance, and/or monetary policy, including the role of regulation and its consequences. Employ econometric and statistical techniques to analyze and assess economic behaviors and their policy implications. Synthesize findings into blog posts, research notes, and memoranda. Develop academic papers for publication in reputable peer-reviewed academic journals in finance and economics. Present findings to senior-level employees at BPI member banks and U.S. federal agencies (Federal Reserve, OCC, FDIC, SEC, etc.) and to media. Organize conferences and symposiums on BPI-related issues. Assist Regulatory Affairs colleagues in managing member groups and preparing comment letters as needed. Assist Public Affairs colleagues in preparing advocacy-focused communications. Other duties as required to meet business needs.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Published original research on financial institutions, financial markets, household finance, or related areas. Made contributions influencing policy deliberations in bank or other financial regulations. Strong oral and written communication skills including the ability to explain economic concepts to non-economists. Work collaboratively with others. Proactive, entrepreneurial self-starter who can be relied upon to take initiative, work independently, and efficiently prioritize objectives and deliverables. Accuracy of data analysis and the ability to thrive in a dynamic and results-oriented workplace. Proficiency in STATA, R or other statistical software. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite.
Education
PhD in economics, finance or related fields. Five or more years of experience in a research-oriented position in academia, regulatory agency, or public policy institution. Expertise in banking and bank regulation, financial markets or monetary policy is required.
Physical Requirements
Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

This is a Washington, DC-based position. The successful candidate generally will be expected to work in the DC office Monday-Thursday, with remote work option on Fridays. In addition, employees are afforded an additional 20 days of flex/remote workdays annually.
