Overview
Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled. Review of applications will begin immediately upon receipt and is ongoing. Performs various types of manual labor and operates light equipment in the maintenance of City streets, parks, utilities, and landscaping.
The Public Works seasonal positions are full time positions working from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday – Thursday starting Memorial Day May 26, 2025, to Labor Day September 1, 2025.
Work schedules outside of the dates listed above will be Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All seasonal employees are required to work scheduled days and hours.
Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled. We have the first round of interviews scheduled for the week of March 24, 2025. The second round of interviews will be the week of April 21, 2025.
Streets/Parks/Landscaping
- Patch and crack fill streets with asphalt materials
- Performs maintenance operations and repairs on public works buildings, facilities, and equipment, including light vehicle maintenance and repair.
- Assists with inspecting, repairing, and installing playground equipment.
- Mows grass, weed-whips parks & boulevard areas, maintains trees, shrubbery, and plants with hand and power equipment.
- Assists with the maintenance and marking of ball-playing fields.
- Pick up and remove trash from parks and landscaping and public right of way.
- Assists with landscape functions including planting of trees, disposal, and cutting of limbs, operating chipper, and other appropriate equipment.
- Assists with construction, maintenance and repair of curbs and gutters, catch basins and storm drainage system, storm drainage detention facilities, asphalt and concrete streets, alleys, sidewalks, and trails.
- Assists with traffic control duties, including installation and maintenance of temporary and permanent signs and pavement markings.
Utility Maintenance
- Assists with repairs and maintenance of fire hydrants.
- Assists with restoring the condition of road or ground affected by utility repair and maintenance work.
- Exercises and cleans gate valves.
- Mows and weed whips at City facilities.
- Assists other departments as needed or assigned.
General
- Follows all safety rules and procedures as outlined in the Brooklyn Center employee safety manual, O.S.H.A. laws, and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.
Minimum Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years old.
Must be able to work independently with limited supervision, lift up to 35 lbs. frequently, and be able to work outdoors for a full 40-hour work week as needed. A tentative start date of May 5, 2025, is the first day for some seasonal roles to start.
Hours are 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday from the week of Memorial Day (5/26) to the Friday prior to Labor Day (9/1). Work schedules outside this time period will be 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
